Act 2 sc 2 Objectives To comment on the way ONeill portrays the characters negative characteristics, yet has the audience to an extent feeling sympathetic towards them.

Look at the opening stage directions: How has each character reacted to Marys return to morphine addiction? ONeill portrays the characters in the play as highly flawed, yet he makes the audience feel a degree of sympathy for each of them. Pairs work on an individual character to produce a positive/ negative table for them. These can then be fed into a shared document.

Re-read Act 2 sc 2 Act 2 sc 2 Character Things which the audience wont like about them Things which make the audience sympathetic to them TyroneP75 Tyrone lowers his voice when he hears news from the doctor - despite his annoyance/ disappointment with Mary, he doesnt want her hurt or worried MaryP74 Her face instantly set in blank denial Suggests her refusal to acknowledge her addiction JamieP82 Argues to try to get Tyrone to send Jamie to a good sanatorium, not a poor, cheap one. EdmundP97 When Mary viciously says shes going to the drugstore – she seems to deliberately try to hurt him.
