Erosion and Deposition Glaciers ● Glacier - a large mass of ice that moves over land ● Alpine glaciers – occur in mountain and are erosional ● Continental.
 As much as plate tectonics builds up the Earth’s surface, forces in nature are also working to wear it down. One major force of erosion happens due.

What are Glaciers? Masses of ice formed on land by the compaction of snow.  Factor of glacier movement: gravity (caused by weight of ice)

Chapter 12 Section 3 Part 1 Glacier Alpine Glacier Continental Glacier Horns Cirques Aretes Glaciers move by? U- Shaped Valleys

Glacier A large (enormous) mass of ice

Alpine Glacier Glaciers that form in mountainous area.

Continental Glacier Glaciers that are huge and spread across entire continents.

Horns Sharp, pyramid shaped peaks that form when three or more cirque glaciers erode “a” mountain.

Cirques Bowl-shaped depressions where glacial ice cuts back into mountain walls.

Aretes Jagged ridges that form between two or more cirques cutting into the same mountain.

Glaciers move by? The ice underneath the glacier melts but does not drain away thus it builds up beneath the ice. This buildup of melt-water decreases the friction between the glacier and the land below which causes the glacier to flow.

U-Shaped Valleys Forms when a glacier erodes a river valley from its original V shape to a U shape.
