How to Write an Abstract for a Conference

Know the Requirements Conferences usually have a set of abstract rules to follow how many words, submission dates, where and how to submit, title length, etc. Be sure to research a head of time so you know when certain items are due. Don’t wait till last minute. Look at previous programs to get an idea of what the abstracts have looked like in the past. Does the abstract need to be written for a general audience or a specific field?

Undergraduate Research Conference Abstract Requirements Abstract Requirements and Information: The abstract is a 250-word (or less) summary of your work that describes: The purpose of your work The central research question addressed A brief description of your methods/processes The findings and implications of your work

Conventions of Abstracts Avoid using the first person "I" or "we."  Talk about “the research” or “the study.” Use active verbs. “This study tests . . . “ “The research examines . . .” Be specific.

What is the problem your research addresses? What is your main claim or argument?   5. What is the central research/project question addressed? What are you trying to find out? What questions prompted you to conduct this research?

Undergraduate Research Conference Abstract Requirements cont. 6. Describe your methods or process. What data did you gather? How did you gather it? How did you analyze it? What steps did you take?   7. What are your findings and implications of your work? What did you find out? Was your hypothesis or argument supported? Who can benefit from this research/project? What might change because of this research/project? What are the next steps another researcher might want to take to build on your research?

Summarize the central research question addressed in a couple sentences. Summarize your methods/steps you took in a couple sentences. Summarize the findings and implications of your work in a couple sentences.    

Keep in Mind   It is ok if you do not have a finished research/creative project. Write your abstract based on what you have done and what you anticipate happening.
