Language Arts - The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer Chapter 13 4/12/18

Warm-up #1, 4/12

Warm-up #2, 4/12

Vocabulary Analogy: A comparison of two things that are somehow alike. Ex. Just like soldiers use weapons, writers use pens. This analogy compares pens to weapons. Analogies can employ both similes and metaphors.

Agenda, 4/12 Learning Target: Analyzing characters Warm-up – grammar Ticket Out the Door (paragraph writing, collected for a grade) HOTS Quiz Grammar Packet HW – USA Test Prep. Due Friday, 4/13 (extended one day) Learning Target: Analyzing characters Recognizing misplaced modifiers

Exit Ticket, 4/12 (Write on Notebook paper to turn in at the end of class) Choose Maria, Celia, Tam Lin, or El Patron. Write a short paragraph explaining two major choices that character has made and the consequences those choices have had on Matt. You will need to include specific examples from the novel and our journal character charts. You also must include at least one quote from the text to support your writing.

This is the real oasis that inspired Nancy Farmer to write about the oasis that Tam Lin shows Matt in the novel. It is the Quitobaquito Oasis in Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument in Arizona:

This is an artist’s rendering of the Ajo Mountains.
