What to do this summer? GET A PLANNER for all things college. Check out college websites, visit campuses if you have not already. Make a list of your top five. Have a plan for completing applications in the fall. Research scholarships and due dates and put them in your planner. While you have time this summer get any essays for scholarships written, resumes or work that can be done now. Register for the ACT and/or SAT-Register online to take test Write down questions in your planner as they come into your head so we can help resolve them together. Register with NCAA Eligibility Center if you plan to play college sports. ENJOY YOUR LAST SUMMER IN HIGH SCHOOL AND MAKE UP YOUR MIND TO STAY FOCUSED ALL YEAR----NO SENIOR SLIDE!!!!!!!

Preparing Juniors for Senior Year.. Counselors met with all juniors individually in the fall to discuss graduation requirements, concentrations, college & career planning and course selections. Students were given a Junior Planning Guide. Counselors met with all juniors individually in March to finalize course selections for senior year and began post-secondary planning. Juniors took ACT February 28th, 2018 at CHHS

Resume or Activity Sheet All juniors will be asked to submit a resume or activity sheet. These will be collected through their history courses. This information will allow counselors to start preparing for their senior year.

Senior Conferences Mid September we will begin senior conferences. Each counselor will meet with their seniors individually. In this meeting we will : Ensure graduation requirements are being met and answer any questions they may have about college and/or after high school plans.

A few facts about applying for college Early Action - Apply early. Receive an admission decision early in the admission cycle (usually in December-January or February). Consider acceptance offer; do not have to commit upon receipt. Apply to other colleges under regular admission plans. Give the college a decision no later than the May 1 national response date. Rolling Admission- Under rolling admission, candidates are invited to submit their applications to the university anytime within a large window. The window is usually over six months long, and some schools do not have a previously specified end date (the window simply closes when all spots are filled). The university will then review the application and notify the applicant of their decision within a few weeks from submission. November 1 is typically a big deadline for fall applications. Early Decision – Binding Agreement Apply early (usually in November) to first-choice college. Receive an admission decision from the college well in advance of the usual notification date (usually by December). Agree to attend the college if accepted and offered a financial aid package that is considered adequate by the family. Apply to only one college early decision. Apply to other colleges under regular admission plans. Withdraw all other applications if accepted by ED. Send a nonrefundable deposit well in advance of May 1.

Have you taken the ACT or SAT If you plan to go to a four year college it is important to take the ACT and/or the SAT. If you plan to attend a community college you do not need to take the ACT/SAT but if you have higher scores it can replace the placement test at the community college. Check actstudents.org for the ACT dates and registration information. Check Collegeboard.org for SAT dates & registration information. If you need a fee waiver, please see your counselor.

What is CFNC.org College Foundation of NC is a free planning tool for high school students and parents. It allows students to complete interest inventories, prepare resumes, search for colleges and majors, search for scholarships, and apply to college. If your student does not have an account with CFNC please have them get one this summer. It is a fabulous tool at their fingertips.

CFNC continued…. Check the individual college/university sites for their minimum requirements. CFNC.org also has university profiles that will show the average GPA, ACT/SAT scores for incoming freshman.

Scholarships Visit the CHHS Student Services Scholarship page. We announce scholarships so please encourage your student to listen to announcements. File cabinet in student services is where scholarship information is kept! Check often and do a lot of research over the summer Morehead-Cain, Park and Levine – Information will be mailed to qualifying students in August. Anyone can self nominate so check out the websites this summer.

Financial Aid The first and most important step for getting financial help for college is filling out your Free Application for Federal Student Aid, also known as the FAFSA. https://fafsa.ed.gov/ Students/Families can complete a FAFSA as early as October 1st, using previous year tax information. Visit CFNC.org for more information on Financial Aid Consult with Financial Aid offices at the colleges/universities Attend Financial Aid Workshops

How do I request a transcript to be sent to a College or University? The transcript request form can be picked up in Student Services. You can use the same form to request multiple transcripts. You must provide stamped envelopes. We will return sealed transcripts to students to mail if a stamped envelope is not provided. A Final Transcript is required by colleges/universities. Electronic Transcripts-Uploaded (CommonApp, Sendedu)

NCAA Clearinghouse Fee $65.00 If you plan to play a sport at a division I or II school, you must register with the NCAA Clearinghouse. Register Early so colleges/universities will know you are eligible to play collegiate sports. Official Test Scores must be sent directly to NCAA. “9999”
