Toilet Paper Solar System Background: Even in our own “cosmic neighborhood,” distances in space are so vast that they are difficult to imagine. In this activity, we will build a scale model of the solar system using a roll of toilet paper. Materials: A roll of toilet paper Set(s) of planet stickers

2) Lay out 100 sheets of toilet paper Procedure: 1) With your lab groups, label the very beginning of the toilet paper roll as the Sun. 2) Lay out 100 sheets of toilet paper 3) Make a prediction with your lab group as to where the following planets are located. Place the labeled sticker where you think the planets are located on the toilet paper sheet. Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Dwarf Planet Pluto

4) After your predictions are made, use the second set of labeled stickers to accurately place the planets in the correct locations on the toilet paper. Use the table of distances that your teacher gives you to find the distances between each of the planets in our solar system. The number in the table is the number of sheets of toilet paper needed to reach the orbit of each planet from the Sun, so keep a running count as you go along. (in other words, counts in the table start from the Sun, NOT from the previous planet. Ex: After you get to Mercury, you only need 0.8 more sheets to get to Venus, not 1.8 sheets). This also means that the beginning of the roll represents the Sun.

Conclusion Questions: 1) Compare and contrast your predictions to the actual distance between planets and the Sun. 2) Since this activity was not drawn to scale, how many km are represented by 13.2 squares of toilet paper? 3)Which planet in our solar system is located at the distance found at the location in the question above?
