Layers of the Atmosphere
Troposphere troposphere begins at the Earth's surface and extends from 4 to 12 miles high. This is the layer of the atmosphere in which we live. Made mostly of oxygen and nitrogen Temperature in the troposphere goes down as you go higher into the troposphere Most dense layer of the atmosphere Layer where most commercial airplanes fly Layer where weather events take place
Stratosphere The ozone layer is located in the stratosphere Temperature in the stratosphere goes up as you go higher into the stratosphere because of the absorption of ultraviolet rays by the ozone layer. Layer where weather balloons gather data
Mesosphere Coldest atmospheric layer Temperature goes down as you go higher into the mesosphere.
Thermosphere Thermosphere means “heat sphere” Temperatures can rise to over 10000 Celsius, but there are very few molecules in this layer so you would not actually feel the heat
Exosphere the outermost layer of the atmosphere Made mostly of hydrogen and helium Extremely thin air Layer where satellites orbit the earth
