Registration tips & tricks Husky MOSSAIC 2017

Before you register Look at the visual schedule to determine breaks between classes Will there be enough time to get to class in Building A from Building B? Do you have time for lunch in between classes? Do you have any longer breaks? What can you do during those breaks? Is there enough time to go home, or will you have to find somewhere to go on campus to pass the time? Make sure your classes are at a sustainable time Will you be able to consistently wake up early enough for an 8:30am? Will you be able to motivate yourself to stay on campus for a 5:30pm class? Do you commute to campus? If so, will you need to leave a class early or come in late because of your bus, ferry, or Light Rail?

Before you register Use schedule finder! This tool… Provides a visual representation of what your proposed schedule would look like Provides a schedule for all available sections of the selected courses Will notify you of any conflicts between classes Have you looked at the syllabi for these classes? Is it a reasonable workload (can you take all of them during the same quarter and do well)? Look to see which ones are listed as writing intensive or seminars, or have a lab

Before you register Compile a list of back-up classes that will fit into your schedule in case one or more of your ideal classes fills up before you register Write down all of your ideal and back-up classes’ class codes. You will need these to register Example: Neuroanatomy’s class code is SPHSC 449 Make sure to complete the questionnaire on MyUW before your registration period starts!

During registration Registration typically starts at 6am – set your alarm for a few minutes before then so that you can have everything ready once it begins Have your list of class codes ready! (see previous slide) If you live in the dorms: WiFi can get slow when everyone logs on at once to register. It can be faster to use your phone to register

During registration If you get a red X, don’t worry! Look to see which class is causing the problem Take it off of your registration Register for all of your other classes Once you’re registered for all of the other classes, you can figure out what the problem was with the class that caused the red X and how to fix it. This makes sure that your other classes don’t fill up while you try and solve a problem with just one!

Other considerations If you are unsure about how much work a class might be or would like to see a syllabus, email the professor! *Check out the Email Templates PowerPoint for a sample (template 6b)
