Petrified Remains Hard and rock like Hard and rock like Original material replaced by minerals Original material replaced by minerals Ex. bones, wood.
8-2.2 Vocabulary 10/21/14. Fossil: the preserved remains or traces of an organism that lived in the past, usually more than 10,000 years ago.
Fossils A fossil is the preserved remains or traces of living things They must be natural and ancient (10,000 years or older) and buried in rocks.

There are different kinds of fossils
A Fossil is the preserved remains of animals or plants from an earlier era in rock or other geological deposit, often in a petrified state. There are.

What is a fossil? What do fossils tell us?
Learning Targets 1.Identify a mold and cast fossil. 2.Identify a trace fossil. 3.Identify a petrified fossil. 4.Identify preserved remains. 5.Identify.
Essential Questions: What are fossils and how are they formed? What are the different kinds of fossils? What do fossils tell about how organisms have changed.
Remains of once living organisms. Form from decay and are buried by sediment. Sediment hardens into rock and preserves the shape of the organisms.

Section 10.1 Fossils Key Concepts How do fossils form? What are the different kinds of fossils? What does the fossil record tell about organisms and environments.
Notes. Fossils are perserved remains or traces of living things. Fossils normally form in sedimentary rock. Hard parts are the only parts of an organism.

Presentation transcript:

Fossil Types

A. Petrified Fossils 1. Organism covered by sediments 2. Water with dissolved mineral seeps between cells 3. Over time, water evaporates, leaving hardened minerals

Ex. Petrified Wood

Ex. Dinosaur Dig

Molds 1. Organism covered by sediments 2. Organism dissolves, leaving hollow area in rock (ex. Jello mold)

Ex. Leaf Mold

c. Casts 1. Water deposits minerals and sediments in mold, leaving a copy of the organism’s shape

Ammonite Shell Cast

D. Carbon Films 1. Organism covered by sediments 2. Gases escape, leaving thin film of carbon on rock

Ex. Carbon Film of leaf

Trace Fossils 1. Instead of organisms shape, shows activity (ex. Dinosaur footprints)

Ex. Trace Fossil

F. Preserved Remains 1. Organism preserved in tar, amber or frozen 2. Does not decay

Ex. La Brea Tar Pit Excavation

Ex. Insect in Amber

Ex. Frozen Woolly Mammoth Discovered in 1999; preserved for 23,000 years in Siberia
