Prohibition By Austin Saley
What I will talk about What is prohibition Why was prohibition important US prohibition US prohibition vs Canadian prohibition Rum runners Intent for prohibition Effects of prohibition Pros and cons of prohibition
What is Prohibition? Prohibition is an act that made the Production, import, and transportation of alcohol illegal In Canada prohibition was spread out over Canada from 1918-1920 Each province stopped prohibition at a separate time The last province to get rid of prohibition was PEI and they stopped in 1948
Why was it important? Prohibition started during WWI It was started because alcohol is made with wheat and the government thought that the grain was better to be used as food sent to the soldiers on the battlefield All provinces agreed to prohibition except for Quebec This was supported by women’s temperance society’s, merchants, and churches throughout Canada
US Prohibition It lasted from 1919-1933 Prohibition was much stricter in the US There were a lot of bootleggers in the US who made bootleg rum, some with various poisonous ingredients while selling alcohol was illegal drinking it was not. Rich people who bought large quantities of alcohol before prohibition could still drink it inside their homes
US vs Canadian Prohibition Less strict Just for help with provisions for war in the beginning Much more strict about prohibition Prohibition was made for religious purposes as well as for the war
Rum Runners Rum runners were smugglers who ran illegal alcohol across the border The smugglers often used ships, carriages, and snowshoes to get the alcohol across The government estimated that over $1 million worth of alcohol was smuggled across the border from Windsor to Detroit each month They used special pockets that they could fit under their coats to smuggle the alcohol past the police
Intent for Prohibition After the war effort the government intended prohibition to help with crime, jobs, and economy They thought that if there were less drunk men then they would not commit as many crimes since they were sober If people were sober then then they would work harder finding jobs and looking for jobs They also thought that if there was less alcohol then there would be a rise in economy
Effects of Prohibition Crime rates rose and regular people became thieves and robbers Government lost millions in taxes Because only the selling and transporting of alcohol was illegal people could drink it alcohol they bought in advance in their houses without any troubles
Pros and cons of prohibition More grain for soldiers at war Crime rates rose Economy fell Bootleggers appeared Mob wars happened more often
