Water Exploitation Index (WEI) & Water Exploitation Index plus (WEI+) ESTP Water Statistics Paris 2018 Arnulf Schönbauer THE CONTRACTOR IS ACTING UNDER A FRAMEWORK CONTRACT CONCLUDED WITH THE COMMISSION

Water Exploitation Index Key messages: Total water abstraction has decreased over the last decade in most regions of Europe with the exception of western southern Europe where it has been constant. 18 % of Europe's population live in countries that are water stressed.

Water Exploitation Index The water exploitation index (WEI), or withdrawal ratio, in a country is defined as the annual total abstraction of fresh water divided by the long-term average freshwater resources.

Water Exploitation Index

Water Exploitation Index + WEI+ compares water consumption with renewable water resources in a given spatial and temporal unit: 𝑾𝑬𝑰+ = (𝑨𝒃𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔−𝑹𝒆𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒏𝒔) 𝑹𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒘𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝑾𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒄𝒆𝒔

Water Exploitation Index + 𝑹𝑾𝑹 𝟏 =𝑬𝒙𝑰𝒏+𝑷−𝑬𝑻𝒂− 𝜟𝑺 𝒏𝒂𝒕 𝑹𝑾𝑹 𝟐 =𝑶𝒖𝒕𝒇𝒍𝒐𝒘+ 𝑨𝒃𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔−𝑹𝒆𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒏𝒔 − 𝜟𝑺 𝒂𝒓𝒕 Where: ExIn: External Inflow P: Precipitation ETa: Actual evapotranspiration ΔS: Change in storage (either natural or artificial)

JQ-IW as data source Total renewable freshwater resources (table 1) feshwater abstraction (table 2) losses (table 3)
