Atascocita High School February 12, 2018 College Readiness In this session, we are going to provide information about the advanced course offerings at AHS. We have information about some of the summer reading assignments, how to enroll in AP and Dual Credit courses, and information about a new summer academy beginning this summer. Important/Upcoming Dates Friday, February 16th : Four Year Plan changes due to House Counselor Monday, April 2nd at noon: Deadline to register for AP Exams aptestservice.com/atascocita/ap Friday, April 20th : Deadline to submit TSI scores and the deadline to submit summer Dual Credit requests Friday, May 11th: Deadline to submit ALL forms for Dual Credit

Purpose To ensure that students are supported in their college and career goals; To provide information and resources to help students in making decisions about their post-HS planning AHS offers 3 types of advanced courses – Pre-AP at the 9th and 10th grade levels, AP courses beginning at the 9th grade level, and Dual Credit courses for Juniors and Seniors.

Here is what some people said… it’s a mixture of academic, social, emotional skills needed to success in a college environment. challenging courses social awareness

“College Readiness” “A high school graduate has the knowledge and skills (English and mathematics) necessary to qualify for and succeed in entry-level college coursework without remediation.” (adapted from achieve.org and other sources) So our goal, academically, is to provide opportunities for students to gain the skills necessary not only to get into college, but to successfully complete the college coursework. So, tonight, you’ll hear us talk a lot about these skills and how students can develop them while in high school, especially through advanced coursework.

Tonight’s Agenda We will release from our general session to two 30-minute-long interest sessions. Choose the sessions that you believe will be most beneficial to your student at this stage in his/her high school career. Handouts and presentations will be available on the Counselor Page of the AHS website later this week. humbleisd.net/Domain/2819 Following the breakout sessions, presenters will be in front of the PAC to answer any final questions you may have.

College 101 - PAC Christina Spears Information about the college application process, with an emphasis on obtaining scholarships and financial aid

Core Complete - 1108 Lesa Pritchard Information about Dual Credit and the Core Complete plan Learn how your student can graduate with 42 hours of core college curriculum 8th-10th grade students

Advanced Academics at AHS - 1208 Meredith LeBlanc Information about advanced course offerings at AHS, including Pre-AP, AP, and Dual Credit Information about enrolling in Humble ISD’s Summer Dual Credit Academy

College Admissions Testing – Red LGI Harleigh Jones Information about the resources available to strengthen college readiness skills and, specifically, skills needed to improve SAT/ACT scores

Other Available Resources Computer Lab in Red 1 Check student course requests in Bridges Link College Board and Khan Academy accounts Register for AP exams Dual credit questions/information Submit changes to student course requests for 2018-2019 Ask participants to save questions they have until the last few minutes of the session. Introduce Dr. Ned, Director of Advanced Academics for the district. He will present information about a new district program, the Dual Credit Summer Academy. Dual Credit courses will be available in a summer session, held at AHS in June and July. After he is finished, take questions about pathways, encourage parents to pick up summer assignment information, make sure everyone has handouts they need, etc.
