Topic Question: Are bacteria, plant and animal cells prokaryotic or eukaryotic?
 TURN IN your Test Corrections!  In your Bellwork section: ◦ Compare and Contrast “water” and a “plant” ◦ How are they the same? ◦ How are they different?
Learning Challenges Describe the structural differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells Explain the purpose of plasmids, capsules and flagella.
1. Order Order Analyzing a biological structure gives us clues about what it does and how it works.
Classifying Organisms into Different Kingdoms. Is a nucleus present? No = Prokaryote- [ “Pro” means before “karyote” means kernel/capsule] - DNA not contained.
Cells Essential Question: What are cells and why is it important for us to understand cells?
 In your Bellwork section: ◦ Compare and Contrast “water” and a “plant” ◦ How are they the same? ◦ How are they different? ◦ What makes a “water” a “water?”

“Comparing and Analyzing Cell Size Using ImageJ” Summary: In this activity students will measure and analyze cells using ImageJ. Based on their findings they will classify each cell as either prokaryotic, eukaryotic, or neither. By observing the different cells, students should be able to compare and contrast the two types of cells. “What do you need in an image to accurately measure an object using ImageJ?” “What characteristics (besides size) could help classify these cells as either pro- or eukaryotic?” “What are 3 defining characteristics between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells?” “From the group of images, which were prokaryotic? Eukaryotic?” “Which cells evolved first – prokaryotic or eukaryotic? Why?”
