Today’s Learning Targets: I can explain the purpose and process of the military draft. I can analyze the differences and similarities between the Vietnam War draft and the draft today.

Vocabulary Military Draft/Military Conscription: Lottery: Required and/or forced enrollment of persons for military or naval service Lottery: A system used to decide who will get or be given something by choosing names or numbers by chance

Draft of 1969 Televised by CBS News: http://youtu.be/-p5X1FjyD_g?t=16s Lottery Process Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft_lottery_%281969%29

Would you have been drafted? http://www.sss.gov/PDFs/PrinterFriendly/Lottery/1970.pdf

How would the draft work today? National Draft Lottery: Men turning age 20 during year of draft would be drafted first Then men ages 21,22,23,24,25 Men younger than 20 would not be drafted until men 20-25 had already been drafted

How Would the Draft Work Today? Media Would be present Similar Lottery Process: Two large air drums; one filled with balls numbered 1-365, the other with each day of the year (January 1- December 31)

Assignment Write and/or illustrate a poster for a draft notice. Be sure to address what is the need to be filled and the criteria for persons who are to be drafted.
