Cellular Respiration

C6H12O6 + 6O2 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP Purpose of cellular respiration: Break down food to provide raw materials for building organic molecules, and to provide energy for doing cellular work. What are the reactants and products of the reaction? How is cellular respiration related to breathing? Why do living organisms need oxygen?

Food to Fuel Chemical - Building molecules Mechanical - Movement Living organisms do not use food directly for energy to do cellular work All living organisms must convert food to ATP to perform cellular work. There are three main kinds of cellular work: Chemical - Building molecules Mechanical - Movement Transport - moving substances across membranes

What types of molecules are broken down? Any food (organic) molecule, or nutrient, including carbohydrates, fats/lipids, and proteins can be processed and broken down as a source of energy to produce ATP.

Cellular Respiration A process of converting the energy in food molecules to ATP. Food energy is an unusable form, ATP is a usable form. ATP is a small packet of energy. Oxygen is required for this process to run most efficiently. 38 ATP per 1 glucose molecule if oxygen is present in cells. 2 ATP are made per 1 glucose molecule without oxygen

What types of organisms undergo cellular respiration? All Organisms!!!!!! Heterotrophs AND Autotrophs

Cellular Respiration Reaction Occurs in three stages Glycolysis - Sugar Splitting-cytoplasm The Krebs Cycle - mitochondria Oxidative phosphorylation -mitochondria The purpose of the three stages is to break apart glucose in many steps to reduce the amount of heat released at one time. (Heat is also an unusable source of energy)
