Sample Learning Check Questions: Describe an economic or political factor that drove Europe to imperialism: Europe needed new markets for its manufactured goods. European powers needed coaling stations to support merchants and assure their defense. Europe wanted to pursue resources that are scarce or nonexistent in Europe.

Notes: Social Darwinism Social Darwinism is the belief that the theory of Evolution can also be applied to societies. It states that the best and most well-adapted societies naturally develop wealth and success through conflict with lesser societies.

The White Man’s Burden We are going to read part of a poem. This poem was written by a British man (Rudyard Kipling) to warn America about the challenges of being an empire. Think about what this poem is saying the goal of imperialism is.

The White Man’s Burden (abridged) -Rudyard Kipling (1899) Take up the White Man's burden, Send forth the best ye breed Go bind your sons to exile, to serve your captives' need; To wait in heavy harness, On fluttered folk and wild— Your new-caught, sullen peoples, Half-devil and half-child. Take up the White Man's burden, The savage wars of peace—   Fill full the mouth of Famine And bid the sickness cease; And when your goal is nearest The end for others sought,   Watch sloth and heathen Folly Bring all your hopes to nought. Notebook: According to this poem, what is the relationship between an imperial power and those it conquers?

NOTEBOOK: What does this advertisement suggest about non-white people?
