Sustainability & Environmental Viewpoints Topic 2 : A-E

Are we running out of space?

If not space, then what are we running out of? Resources, land to dispose of waste

Natural Resources = Natural Capital Can be non-renewable: Resources that cannot be replenished in the time frame that we are using them. Examples: Can be renewable: Resources that can be replenished in the time frame that we use them.

Tragedy of the Commons Definition: the depletion, degradation, or overexploitation of a resource or area that is not owned by anyone and therefore owned by everyone. In other words - self interest and competition ruin shared resources. Examples?

What is sustainability? Living within the means of nature…on the “interest” of the resource. Using a resource at a rate which will not reduce the amount of that resource in the future. How much of a resource can sustainably be used in a year? Is it possible for non-renewable resources to be used sustainably?

What is Sustainable Development? Using a resource that will satisfy the current needs without reducing the amount of that resource for the future generations. The debate? Economists vs Environmentalists

What factors need to be taken into consideration? Social factors? Economic factors? Environmental factors?

All 3 of these a part of sustainability

Environmental Value System (EV) Environmentalists have different philosophies on how to be sustainable and approach our environmental issues. What factors would influence our EV?

Assessment Statement 2-G: Outline the range of EVs Left Side Right Side Double Bubble: Ecocentric versus Anthro/Techno With at least: 3 similarities 4 or 5 differences 3 circle maps with: Ecocentric Anthropocentric Technocentric
