Key issue and evidence of practice Design an information leaflet

Understanding a mental disorder Issue Understanding a mental disorder Depression

Issue Do a key issue essay plan on understanding mental illness Remember an issue has to be an issue this means there is debate and controversy surrounding it Make the issue about misconceptions about depression So come up with misconceptions and then using your new found knowledge address these misconceptions one at a time

Leaflet Now design a leaflet based around this issue

Target audience Young people age 13 – 19 Reasons 90% suicide in young people are caused by depression They have a lot of trigger issues around that age Exam pressure First love Body change and hormonal issues Bullying They need something separate from their parents to get information It is a transition period and they need to know about depression as they may get it as an adult but will have ignored this type of info up till now They are vulnerable to the media and chat rooms and we-sites about suicide and committing suicide

Intended outcomes Increase awareness of the features and symptoms of depression in young people aged 13 – 19 Get rid of misconceptions Develop understanding of symptoms and any unusual symptoms Help to recognise it in other young people as they are better placed than adults to recognise symptoms if they know what they are Help them to distinguish between depression and every day sadness Make aware they can get help Give them places to go for help

Design features Front Simple because people wont pick up if cluttered Key statistic in a banner Key picture as that is eye catching Picture of class of 10 with 1 person blacked out to represent the 1 in 10 also good as we can have different races and genders in the pic Copied modern trendy colour pallet from ‘my space’ who would have researched it

inside Address each desired outcome with things like A cartoon strip A spot the symptoms quiz A storyboard a true life story

Back page Put all the help lines and people to see section on back so those who don’t want to read middle can just turn over for numbers

Now answer the following questions Discuss your key issue relating to clinical psychology (12) You designed a leaflet based on this issue State your target audience and and give reasons for your choices (4) State your desired outcomes and give reasons for them (5) Describe the key features of your leaflet and give reasons for all your design choices (6)
