What might this tell us about today’s lesson? What is different about this bank note compared to those you saw a few lessons ago? What might this tell us about today’s lesson? The picture is a “Two Rentenmark” note. Students might identify that this has a different name to the Deutsch Mark notes they saw during the Hyperinflation lesson, or the might note that the number is significantly smaller – e.g. 2 rather than thousands/millions. This tells us that today’s lesson is about change/recovery/the end of hyperinflation.

Enter… Gustav Stresemann! Things can only get better! Gustav Stresemann was appointed Chancellor in August 1923 to deal with the Hyperinflation crisis. After this he was appointed Foreign Secretary until his death in 1929 Introduction to Gustav Stresemann

Chancellor: The second most important job in the Reichstag Chancellor: The second most important job in the Reichstag. (President is the most important) Foreign Secretary: The person in Government who works with other Countries to form/keep relationships with them Opportunity for students to record the definitions of keywords Chancellor and Foreign Secretary. Extended thinking exercise is designed to get students thinking about Germany’s precarious position with other nations before Stresemann’s arrival. E.g. Having lost the war, relationships with France after failing to pay reparations and the invasion of the Ruhr, and exclusion from the League of Nations.
