PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCMENTS (PSA) REVOLUTIONARY WRITERS UNIT PROJECT
Public service announcements are messages in the public interest broadcasted by the media with the objective of raising awareness, changing public attitudes, and behavior towards a social issue.
Using the Power of Persuasion to Make a Difference
PSA Project Directions: In groups of 2-4 students, create a PSA to persuade an audience to take part in a cause or charity of your choice. You will incorporate the persuasive techniques and rhetorical devices we have been studying throughout our Revolutionary Writers unit.
Possible Project Formats Video Advertisement: No Kid Hungry Radio broadcast: Fight Childhood Obesity Poster/Flyer/Billboard advertisement:
Project Formats Summarize your argument—why people should agree with your cause or promote your charity Include the name of your cause/charity Explain why people should also support it Verbally and/or visually The persuasive techniques and rhetorical devices need to be displayed/demonstrated in both the written components and the creative formats
Requirements All 3 persuasive techniques At least 2 rhetorical devices Logos, Ethos, Pathos At least 2 rhetorical devices Repetition, Restatement, Rhetorical Question, Allusion Elements of an argument Introduction Hook, background, thesis Body paragraph Support, counterclaim, rebuttal Conclusion Rephrase thesis/sum up ideas Call to action! Typed copy of the PSA (1 per group) 3 paragraphs Bold the persuasive techniques Underline the rhetorical devices
