Día De Los Muertos When we want to address some topics about culture, there is a lot to talk about and teach. That is why, with this presentation, you are going to be challenging your students’ understanding of this vital celebration for Mexican people, which is the famous “Dia de los Muertos”.

Skeletons are terrifying, right? They are not if you are celebrating Day of the Dead.

What? Why? Where? When? Every question has a hyperlink that will lead you to the information that you want to expand on. This is the order of the links: “What?” “Where?” “When?” “Why?” “How?” 3. If you want to, you can click on each item at a time, so when you come back from the slide you talked about, you can easily remember where you began from. If you trust your memory skills, then go ahead and show them all the pieces of information you are going to talk about and then click on each of them one at a time. How?

What is celebrated?

Day of the Dead is a blissful time that This tradition was born out of the mix between ancient Mexican custom of commemorating ancestors and All souls’ Day, a Spanish holiday brought in the colony times. Day of the Dead is a blissful time that helps people remember their dead relatives and rejoice their memory. If you click on the cute skull, it will take you back to the slide number 4; where you can continue explaining the different details about the main topic.

Where is it celebrated?

This holiday is celebrated throughout Mexico, in particular the Central and South regions, and by people of Mexican heritage elsewhere. If you click on the cute skull, it will take you back to the slide number 4; where you can continue explaining the different details about the main topic.

When is it celebrated?

NOVEMBER 2nd 1st If you click on the cute skull, it will take you back to the slide number 4; where you can continue explaining the different details about the main topic.

Why is it celebrated?

It is a way to remind themselves that death is a part of life that allows us to appreciate more our time with our family. By making this day special for their deceased relatives, they are making sure they never actually die. Because according to them, death happens when no one remembers you at all. If you click on the cute skull, it will take you back to the slide number 4; where you can continue explaining the different details about the main topic.

How is it celebrated?

First…

can find their home without getting lost. Relatives of the deceased put up a candlelit altar in their homes so spirits can find their home without getting lost. They also place their dead relatives’ favorite things such as : books, food, musical instruments, toys and anything that was precious to them. A good question that can get your students engaged with your presentation is “What items would you like your relatives to place on your altar for them to remember you?” If they don’t know, you can start by answering the question and then encourage them to follow up.

Then…

Families go to the graveyard bringing a huge feast to eat while they polish tombstones, sing together, and talk to their dead family members. Some families might even introduce their babies to their dead ancestors. If you click on the cute skull, it will take you back to the slide number 4; since all the different details about the main topic have been covered, you might come back if you want to test or review how much students remember. As one of the numerous responsibilities of great teachers, making students aware of the importance of practice after attending any English learning lesson, introducing briefly the movie “COCO” by Disney works great to finish your presentation and also to invite students to put on a test the diverse English skills such as: listening, understanding, and other skills of equal relevance by watching this fascinating movie that illustrates this important celebration for Mexican people. You can click on the title “ BIG SKULL” on the “ THANKS” slide to redirect you to its official trailer on YouTube.
