Speaker: Dott. Carmine Pacente Speaker: Dott. Carmine Pacente. Head of Unit for European Policies and Programs, Metropolitan City of Milan. President of the Unit for European Policies and International Affairs of the Milan City Council. Good morning everyone. Today we are going to talk about a very important urban sustainable development project, concerning a vast problematic area situated in the south-west periphery of the city of Milan. The Lorenteggio district comprehends 2700 houses, with a population of more than 8000 people.

URBAN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT PROJECT FOR THE LORENTEGGIO DISTRICT KEY ACTORS INVOLVED Lombardy Region: 52.7 mln from ERDF + 1.9 (up to 20) mln from ESF . Milan Municipality: 5 mln from NOP Metropolitan cities. ALER Milano: construction building authority. Inhabitants are highly encouraged to participate to education and professionalization courses, which will allow them to enter the job market and improve their life standards. Here we have a look at the main actors involved in the project and the total sum of the investment, which amounts to more than 95 million euros: Lombardy Region, Milan Municipality and ALER Milano. The project consist of two main focuses of action: on one side we have infrastructural interventions, such as requalification of old buildings and of public spaces (for example, the creation of green areas, a new library and the requalification of the local nursery school). Note that from 2023 the area will also benefit from the launch of the new underground line M4, with the stop Segneri situated right in the heart of the district.

JOB CREATION TO ENLIGHTEN THE FUTURE OF THE DISTRICT Listen to the needs of the district and ideas coming from citizens, in order to highlight real priorities and hit the targets. Follow the development of these ideas into real projects, make sure that this initiatives can be put into practice. How? micro-fundings and the restoration of dismissed public areas. The ultimate aim is to give birth to social enterprises able to create jobs and vitality in the district, in order to enlighten its future. However, here we want to focus on the «software» part of the project, the one regarding the introduction and development of innovative social enterprises. The local authorities involved in the project are aware of the importance of job creation in realities like the one we are illustrating. Social enterprises are the most powerful instruments to guarantee an upstanding future for the inhabitants living in such areas. The steps to be taken in order to encourage entrepreneurial initiatives can be summarized as follows: Encourage entrepreneurial initiatives, to carefully listen to the needs of the community and ideas coming from citizens, in order to highlight real priorities and hit the targets. 2) Follow the development of these ideas into real projects, to make sure that this initiatives can be put into practice. This ambitious goal can be reached thanks to microfundings and the restoration of dismissed public areas. 3) Give birth to social enterprises able to create jobs and vitality in the district, in order to enlighten its future.
