Bell Ringer-Key Concept Questions 1. List the steps to the scientific method. 2. Define homeostasis.

Biology: The Study of Life Chapter 1 Biology: The Study of Life

The student will: SWBAT Define Biology Identify the 6 common characteristics of life Define and give an example of homeostasis List the steps of the scientific method and be able to distinguish between each step. Differentiate between variables (Control, Independent, Dependent) in a controlled experiment Distinguish between qualitative and quantitative data. Graph and interpret data

SWBAT Scale 4: Same as a 3.0 but I can make inferences & application to the SWBAT’s 3: I COMPLETELY understand all parts of the SWBAT 2: I understand MOST of the SWBAT’s with teacher help 1: I understand a little of the SWBAT’s but need teacher help 0: I do NOT understand any part of the SWBAT’s and need help!

I. What is Biology? A. The science of biology 1. Biology – the study of life

I. What is Biology? B. Biologists study the Diversity of Life 1. no species, including humans exist in isolation…biologists study interactions 2. propose solutions after study of problem

What qualifies as a living thing? What are the characteristics of living things? Can you come up with 3 or 4?

What qualifies as a living thing? Flames can move, grow, reproduce. Are flames alive?

Characteristics of living thing

I. What is Biology? C. Characteristics of organisms Organism – anything that possesses ALL of the characteristics of life. 1. Organization – made of cells (atom, molecule, organelle, cells, tissue, organ, system, organism)

I. What is Biology? 2. Reproduction – production of offspring *necessary for survival *species- organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring in nature.

I. What is Biology? 3. Growth & Development – increase in amount of living material – changes that take place during the life of an organism

I. What is Biology? 4. Respond to stimuli *stimulus – condition that causes organism to adjust/change *response – reaction to a stimulus *homeostasis – regulation of an organisms internal environment

I. What is Biology? 5. Adaptation – structure, behavior, internal process that enables organism to respond to stimuli *evolution – gradual accumulation of adaptations over time

I. What is Biology? 6. Obtain and use energy – ability to do work

Quick Review 1. Define Biology 2. List 4 of 6 Characteristics of Living Things 3. Define Stimulus 4. Define Homeostasis 5. Define species
