Psalm 100:2 Serve the LORD with gladness; Come before Him with joyful singing. Hymns Invitation Red Songbook - Supplemental

The Mouth Lots of people use the term “personal work”, usually referring to sharing the gospel with others.

James 3 The mouth is the obstacle to perfection - The instrument of the heart (Matthew 15:18) - Any issue with the mouth is in the heart Mt 15:18 "But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man.

James 3 The mouth is the obstacle to perfection It can do wonderful things It can utterly condemn us to hell Mt 15:18 "But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man.

Our Mouth Condemns Us Many ways our tongue condemns us: Boasting (James 3:16) Lying (James 5:12) Blasphemy (James 2:7) Vulgarity (James 1:19-21) Evil Speaking (James 4:11) Mt 15:18 "But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man.

Our Mouth Condemns Us Many ways our tongue condemns us: Boasting…………………….... Boasting in the Lord Lying……………………………..Speaking the Truth Blasphemy…………………... Praising Vulgarity………………………. Speaking with Grace Evil Speaking…………………Edification Mt 15:18 "But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man.

Our Mouth Condemns Us Many ways our tongue condemns us: Boasting…………………….... Boasting in the Lord Lying……………………………..Speaking the Truth Blasphemy…………………... Praising Vulgarity………………………. Speaking with Grace Evil Speaking…………………Edification Boasting is most often addressed in the psalms, proverbs, and 1 and 2 Corinthians

The Evil of Boasting To Boast – To speak to cause people to esteem To speak to make known exploits To challenge others (Galatians 5:26) It is about intent and purpose . Ga 5:26 Let us not become boastful, challenging one another, envying one another.

The Evil of Boasting And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting….. backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things…..who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them. Romans 1:28, 30,32 Ro 1:28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; 32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.

The Evil of Boasting For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy….. having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! 2 Timothy 3:2,5 Ro 1:28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; 32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.

The Evil of Boasting The boastful shall not stand before Your eyes; You hate all who do iniquity. Psalm 5:5 Ro 1:28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; 32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.

The Evil of Boasting We must guard ourselves from what is clearly a terrible danger It is easy to do, and the consequences can be eternal The boastful shall not stand before Your eyes; You hate all who do iniquity.

The Evil of Boasting Boasting about our worldly achievements Thus says the LORD, "Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches” Jeremiah 9:23

The Evil of Boasting Boasting about our worldly achievements 'And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry. But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?' Luke 12:19-20 Lu 12:16 Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: "The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. 17 "And he thought within himself, saying, 'What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?' 18 "So he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. 19 'And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry."' 20 "But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?'

The Evil of Boasting Boasting about our worldly achievements Nebuchadnezzar – Daniel 4 Belshazzar – Daniel 5 Herod Agrippa – Acts 12 Lu 12:16 Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: "The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully.

The Evil of Boasting Boasting about our worldly achievements When we boast about our: Success/wealth Intelligence/education Talents/abilities We risk bringing God’s anger against us Lu 12:16 Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: "The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully.

The Evil of Boasting Boasting about our spiritual achievements For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

The Evil of Boasting Boasting about our spiritual achievements For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. Romans 4:2

The Evil of Boasting Boasting about our spiritual achievements "Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven” Matthew 6:1

The Evil of Boasting Boasting about our spiritual achievements The Pharisee – Luke 18:10-14 The Jewish Christians – Romans 2:17 Lu 18:10 "Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 "The Pharisee stood and was praying this to himself: 'God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 'I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.' 13 "But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, the sinner!' 14 "I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.“ Ro 2:17 ¶ But if you bear the name "Jew" and rely upon the Law and boast in God,

The Evil of Boasting Boasting about our spiritual achievements When we boast about our: Spiritual behavior/knowledge Works of righteousness Abstinence from sin We insult the grace of God Works of righteousness – giving, attendance, etc

The Evil of Boasting Boasting about our heart’s desires For the wicked boasts of his heart's desire, and the greedy man curses and spurns the LORD. Psalm 10:3

The Evil of Boasting Boasting about our heart’s desires Do not boast about tomorrow, For you do not know what a day may bring forth. Proverbs 27:1

The Evil of Boasting Boasting about our heart’s desires Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. Instead, you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that." But as it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil. James 4:14-16 Jas 4:13 Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit." 14 Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. 15 Instead, you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that." 16 But as it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil. 17 Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.

Boasting in the Lord My soul will make its boast in the LORD; The humble will hear it and rejoice. Psalm 34:2

Boasting in the Lord but Christ was faithful as a Son over His house-- whose house we are, if we hold fast our confidence and the boast of our hope firm until the end. Hebrews 3:6

Boasting in the Lord But may it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world Galatians 6:14

Boasting in the Lord Boasting in the Lord means: We boast of His works We boast of His grace We boast of His purpose

Guard Your Tongue Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips. Psalm 141:3 By making the effort to boast in the Lord, We give no room to sinful boasting

But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. Galatians 6:14 Hearing & Believing – Romans 10:17 Confession – Matthew 10:32 Repentance – Acts 2:38 Baptism – Mark 16:16 Remain faithful to Him – Matthew 10:22
