What effect does media manipulation have on celebrities and why is gossip so sensationalized (exaggerated)? Discussion Question #1

If you did not know these celebrities or the context of their lives, would the gossip still matter to you? Discussion Question #2

Would you want your personal life to be public knowledge to millions of people? Discussion Question #3

How would you feel if your life was constantly sensationalized in this way? Discussion Question #4

How was Emily’s life sensationalized? Emily Grierson

Were the individuals who attended Emily’s funeral genuine in their intentions to attend her funeral or were they just there for gossip? Emily Grierson

Why did William Faulkner write “A Rose for Emily” Why did William Faulkner write “A Rose for Emily”? What is the point he is making about our culture? Has anything really changed since this story was written in 1931? Looking past the gruesome undertone of her sleeping next to a corpse for 40 years, is this story still relevant as a representation of society today? Explain. Connect-to-text

Faulkner uses figurative language and literary element in all of his works. In particular, what literary element would you say this lesson is focusing on? (Basically, guess what is on the next slide.) It is a tough one. Literary Elements

It starts with an “A”

Allegory (allegoriacal) Allegory: a story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one. Allegory (allegoriacal)

What hidden meanings can be found throughout the story? Think of the setting and the characters. Hidden Meanings

The Townspeople and the Old South: the townspeople “knew” but were in denial that Emily had actually killed Homer just as the Confederates were in denial after the Civil War and still continued racist practices long after the war. Emily and the Old South (Jefferson, Mississippi): Refusal to change and accept that the times have changed. Just as Emily refuses to change with the times and accept that her once prominent family is no longer in existence, so is Jefferson, Mississippi after the war. What hidden meaning (allegory) can you find that is relatable to today’s society? Hidden Meanings

Allegory (continued) Conforming to society Becoming part of the problem (gossip) ________________________________ Allegory (continued)

Did Emily conform to society? Was it for the better or for the worst? Which is better conforming or denying? How are we conforming to society today? Conforming to Society
