FHS Parent Meeting for Dual Credit Spring 2019

What is AP? AP = Advanced Placement Governed by College Board Not always an on level course to drop to- choose wisely Take AP Exam in May (cost is approximately $55) Commit & pay for exam in November Score on exam determines college credit Students must send scores to college to receive credit 17 AP courses offered

What is Dual Credit? High School & College Credit with one course Partnership with Angelo State University No longer offer SPC online courses Speech & Government online offered through ASU in 2019-2020 (limited seats) Student responsibility to ensure credits transfer College GPA begins with Dual Credit Courses Check Hours Completed for Scholarships

Angelo State University Dual Credit Tuition Free for 3 courses per semester Over 3 courses a semester is paid for by the student Approximately $258 per 3 hours Student responsible for ordering/paying for books Face to face instruction on FHS campus except for Speech and Government (online). Course offerings in Course Guide and on College Readiness website 92 hours offered through ASU

Steps for First Time Dual Credit Students 1. Complete ASU Dual Credit application on FHS website. This step is VERY IMPORTANT and should be completed only ONE TIME while in high school. Application opens the first week of February Correct graduation year is important Correct semester to enroll (Fall 2019) is important 2. Be TSI Compliant Pre-Assessment Activity and Photo ID 3. Complete ASU Off-Site Dual Credit Agreement Form Turn in to counseling suite You only have to do this ONE time

Steps for Returning Dual Credit Students NO application and NO form necessary TSI Compliant for courses requesting in 2019-2020 TSI Exemption with ACT/SAT scores Check in Counseling Suite before you sign up for TSI High Demand for Courses- take spring course request seriously

Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Test to determine College Readiness Four sections: Reading, Writing, Essay & Math Cost of Exam is $15 (all parts OR any section) Register & Pay on FHS College Readiness website/TSI Pre-Assessment Activity Cannot enter testing room without Photo ID and proof of Pre-Assessment Activity Offered at FHS (10th-12th) & 9th Grade Center SPC and TTU are also testing sites and have different costs/times than FHS/9th Grade Center.

Texas Success Initiative (TSI) TSI Exemptions- Bring this to the counseling suite. SAT= 480 on EBRW and/or 530 on Math ACT= Composite score of 23 with a 19 on Math and/or a 19 on English. English, Math, Speech and Government courses are restricted courses. English, Speech, Government- Must pass Reading & Writing sections Math (AP & DC)- Must pass Math section All other courses- Must pass one section Passing TSI Scores Reading 351, Writing 340/4 OR 5, Math 350

Accommodations 504 and Special Education Must complete accommodation application with ASU each semester Initial Application (first time) Renewal Request (2nd semester of DC and beyond) Link can be found on FHS College Readiness website- Angelo State University Dual Credit Tab

Important Dates May 30, 2019 – Deadline for all steps to be completed After May 30th, students will not be able to ADD any DC courses until August registration. Seat availability will be on a first come/first serve basis if students have a complete file and are TSI compliant

What Must Be Complete By May 30th? 1. Apply for admission to ASU – only first time dual credit students 2. Be TSI Compliant for courses you are requesting Passing Scores Reading 351, Writing 350/4 OR 5, Math 350 3. Turn in ASU Off-Site Dual Credit Agreement form to Counseling Suite – only first time dual credit students

Other Important Information SAT School Day: March 6, 2019 to ALL enrolled Juniors No registration necessary – school will take care of this Official test Use PSAT results for test prep on Khan Academy PSAT Results (8th-11th grades) in January and February Juniors- Now is the time to ACT/SAT

2019-2020 Course Requests Online requests begin in February Sheets in the back- next year grade level Choose Wisely Some courses do not have on level options Full sections
