Characteristics of an Epic

A vast setting

Actions that consist of deeds of great valor or those requiring superhuman courage or strength

Supernatural forces

Elevated style (figurative language, imagery, etc.)

A relatively objective narrator (one that tells the story but doesn’t really get personally involved in it; usually third-person point of view)

A hero of imposing stature, broad importance, and/or legendary status

Epic Heroes

What makes a hero? What are some qualities he must possess?

Has “larger than life” qualities, possibly supernatural powers

Is a natural leader of men

Defeats monsters (bad guys) and/or fights gods

Has “good” on his side

Often stands alone in battle

Is smarter than everyone else; generally a problem solver

Makes long journeys, always on the move, travels to find adventure

Is a skilled fighter

Has a weakness that often destroys him or leads to death
