Egyptian Flood Myth By: Hunter Hanna

The Myth The Egyptian flood myth began with the sun god Ra, who feared that people were going to overthrow him. He sent the goddess Hathor, who was his eye, to punish the people. But she killed so many that their blood, flowing into the Nile River and the ocean, caused a flood. Hathor greedily drank the bloody water. Feeling that things had gone too far, Ra ordered slaves to make a lake of beer, dyed red to look like blood. Hathor drank the beer, became very drunk, and failed to finish the task of wiping out humanity. The survivors of her bloodbath started the human race anew.

Cultural Overview The culture of Egypt has thousands of years of recorded history. Ancient Egypt was among the earliest civilizations. For millennia, Egypt maintained a strikingly complex and stable culture that influenced later cultures of Europe, the Middle East and Africa. After the Pharaohic era, Egypt itself came under the influence of Hellenism , for a time Christianity and later, Islamic culture.

5 Similarities to Hebrew flood myth Both threatened to wipe out humanity, but neither succeded because of distractions. Survivors of both of the floods rebuilt the human race. Both leaders of the groups threatened to destroy the race because they felt that they were going to be turned on. Someone powerful got drunk in both myths. Both had someone who acted as an assistant who went and did all the work that had been planned.

5 similarities to Babylonian flood myth Both tried to destroy the race with floods Came up with a plan to not let the problem happen again People became rebellious Floods were blocked off by walls Made it where the people that survived would reproduce in smaller amounts

5 differences between flood account/myth and that of your assigned civilization I am unsure to what this is asking.

How the myth reflects the cultural values of Egypt The myths in Egypt is what the people in ancient Egypt believed because they were in stories told by their ancestors passed on so that the stories would not die and be told for many generations.
