Presentation transcript:

Organs of the human brain

brain stem connects brain to rest of nervous system

medulla oblongata Regulates breathing, heart rate & blood pressure

cerebellum balance & muscle coordination

pons operates facial expressions

filters nerve signals from midbrain filters nerve signals from brain stem

0lfactory bulb relays signals from nose receptors

pituitary gland the “master gland” — regulates the endocrine system

amygdala creates emotions

hypothalamus controls basic drives (sleep, sex & hunger)

hypothalamus regulates neuro-transmitter production

septum processes feelings of pleasure

corpus callosum filters & relays nerve signals between the hemispheres

thalamus relays sensory information

basal ganglia controls eye movement; connects limbic system to cerebrum

basal ganglia operates basic physical movements & reactions

hippocampus builds & organizes memories

cerebrum (beneath the cerebral cortex) performs basic cognitive functions (talking, watching & listening, moving around)

cerebral cortex performs advanced thinking & reasoning; concentration (outer layer of the cerebrum) performs advanced thinking & reasoning; concentration

prefrontal cortex & creativity (highest-level thinking) introspection, moral judgment, philosophy & creativity

visual cortex vision & visualizing; visual memory

motor cortex strip fine motor control, complex movements

sensory cortex strip of fine sensory stimuli advanced perception; interpretation of fine sensory stimuli © Mister Rutter
