LEADING FROM A GROWTH MINDSET: USING POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY FOR EFFECTIVE GOAL SETTING PRESENTED BY: TRANICE’ WARNER

INTRODUCTIONS MS. TRANICE’ WARNER B.S. CIVIL ENGINEERING | CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, FRESNO | 2017 Currently pursuing: Ph.D. ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING | UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA 2015-2017 REGION VI SECRETARY | REB 2017-2018 NATIONAL PUBLIC RELATIONS CHAIRPERSON | NEB Everyone go around the room and introduce yourself with your first name, what grade/yearf you are in, and answer the ice breaker question IF YOU HAD TO LISTEN TO ONE SONG AT LEAST ONCE A DAY FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, WHICH SONG WOULD YOU PICK?

OBJECTIVES You will learn: How to develop realistic self awareness How to use this self awareness to effectively set both short and long term goals How to apply this knowledge to your leadership experience

NSBE PERSONALITY NEATNESS: Clean Freak or Walking Mess SELF SUFFICIENCY: Solo Rider or Team Player BOLDNESS: Life of the Party or Avoid the Lime Light ENABLED: Help More or Complete More You all took a NSBE personality test and saw how you ranked in 4 different areas. This personality test allowed you to see your strengths, but it also allowed you to see your areas of weakness. This is great! When we identify the different aspects of our leadership portfolio, it allows us to apply our talents to a purpose as well as effectively pinpoint areas from growth so that we may become more effective in many different areas. Leadership is not about being perfect. Ultimately, its about balancing your qualities and finding where you can best apply your talents to a purpose while simultaneously working to further your development and the development of others!

ALL [ GREAT] LEADERS SEEK TO GROW Ultimately, leaders seek to grow! Basketball coaches seek to develop the skills of their team so that they can win the championship game. Principles seek to grow and develop the skills and knowledge of their students so that they may graduate them and send them off to lead successful lives. In NSBE, we seek to grow our membership, reach and influence as an organization to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community! No matter what tools or agents we use to get to our end goal, we cannot get to where we want to go without some type of growth and development, and growth and development requires leaders to identify areas of strength and weakness in order to strategically plan and attack their goals!

INTROSPECTIVE ELEMENT OF LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT [in-truh-spek-shuhn] noun The observation or examination of one’s own mental and emotional state, mental processes, etc. The act of looking within ones self

How can you use your strengths to grow in your areas of weakness? Taking what you’ve learned about yourself in your nsbe personality profile and also looking atg some of the other social skills and personality traits that we’ve discussed, when you look at how you interact with others and how you treat yourself, where are you strong areas?
