Title of notes: Sustainability Triangle Pg. 6 RS

Bell work week 21 Pick a science word and write the definition. Chapter 3 or Chapter 4 Check the calendar Don’t forget to check your student vue this week! Goal for lesson: write on your self-assessment I can list and describe the three parts of the sustainability triangle.

understand how different situations impact sustainability. Learning target I can list and describe the three parts of the sustainability triangle. Today I am… looking at mining of minerals to apply the sustainability triangle to this situation. So that I’ll be able to… understand how different situations impact sustainability. I’ll know I’ve got it when… I can create a diagram showing the impact to each side of the sustainability triangle.

Sustainability Balancing our own interests and needs with the health of the environment.

Why consider sustainability? World decision makers face traditional issues (such as economic inactivity, poverty, hunger, and illness), as well as new challenges (like environmental damage and globalization).

Sustainability triangle Environmental Economic Social Economic: Growth, stability, productivity (our economy) Environmental: Resilience, natural resources, pollution, biodiversity Social: Relationships, local culture

Economics side of the triangle The economy domain leans towards improving human welfare, primarily through increases in the consumption of goods and services.

Environmental side of the triangle The environmental domain focuses on protection of the integrity and resilience of ecological systems.

Social side of the triangle The social domain focuses on the improvement of human relationships and achievement of individuals.

Sustainability Diagram Pg. 6 LS What is the impact from mining minerals? Create a diagram showing the impact to each side of the sustainability triangle. The impact could be positive or negative.
