HL-LHC upgrade at IPHC news

News Many progresses on the preparation of the projects. Ladder integration : Integration of 50% of the modules on the ladder, Project accepted by CMS during the CMS week. TB2S mechanics : Eddy and Marc came last week to CERN, to meet the responsible of the CERN mechanic (Antti Onela). Lot of information to digest => Marc and Eddy already made some progresses ! Beam line for CYRCé : Ulrich presented the project at the System test meeting, Well received, but still a bit more work required => simulation and some follow-ups with the PERCy project. Test bench : Working now, still some things to be understood. We should consider presenting in system-test meeting soon ! Time to start implemented the laser ?

News Tracking for the CERN telescope. Goal : prepare track reconstruction for the new (to come) CERN telescope for test beam. Activity started. CERN yellow report : physics prospective, Prepare PAS then yellow report for physics prospective of HL-LHC. Based on fast simulation and ”pheno-style”. We started discussing possible contributions. CMS-France upgrade workshop, on the 20th and 21st of March, Introduction of the HL-LHC (physics cases and detector upgrade) Prepare the funding and sharing within CMS, Times scale => converge toward a CMS-France wise project end of march-beginning of April discussion with our DAS (when?) Signature of MOU in may.

Mécanique de « l’outer tracker »

DAQ

DAQ activity: developments and test of the firmware and software four the inner-tracker. Period of activity: 2018-2023 (already started and well on track). People involved at IPHC: Other needs, cover by the TGIR Person-power : 4 years of IR (325 keuros), Material and missions (~340 keuros). C.Bonnin 100% ETPT Software L.Charles 80% ETPT Firmware L. Gross 20% ETPT Expertise DAQs CMS

Modules integration

TB2S ladder integration Overview of the task (50% of the 344 ladders, 4128 modules). Reception, tests after transportation and storage of the modules. Reception, tests after transportation and storage of the ladders. Assembly of the modules onto the ladders. Functionality tests on equipped ladders : connections, cooling, LH, HV, noises (etc…), also with cooling and in cold environment. Storage and shipment to CERN for final integration. Preparation (2018-2019): Renovate and prepare clean room(s), Build storage facilities, Setting up test benches (3-4 in total), also usable in other labs, Organize and build the assembly lines (2 in total), Preparation of shipments (build boxes, find companies for shipment, etc…), not estimated in the budget yet. Preproduction (2020) : “commission” everything with prototypes, Production (2021-2022). Schedule can be shifter by a few months.

Module integration Permanent persons involved : Physicist(s). We need to define one “person in charge”, interaction with CMS, coordination, preparation and follow-ups. Production engineer, local and technical coordination, preparation and follow-ups. Starting in Oct18. Contribution from STM : building of assembly tables, boxes for shipment, etc… CDDs provided by the TGIR: 4 years of CDD chercheur (also involved in other upgrade activities), 2 AI of 2 years, 2019-2020 and 2020-2021, T : 4 (10 months each) in 2020, 2 in 2021.

TB2S mechanic

TB2S mechanic roue module ladder Our possible contributions to the TB2S mechanics. Assembly of the TB2S wheel : (large) carbon fibres elements produced by industries, Assembly of the TB2S disks and tube, Shipment to CERN.

TB2S mechanic Constructions of connection pieces for assembly of disk and cylinder. Pieces in aluminium. Constructions of pieces for insertion and stands of the TB2S Pieces in titanium, to be designed and constructed.

Mécanique du TB2S Precise contributions still being discussed. Eddy et Marc came to CERN for discussing with the managers of the project. Very intense and fruitful discussions. Activities from 2021 to 2023. For the project to be possible : Large assembly hall, with control of the temperature and lifting equipment, Tools and machines for working with titane, Construction of assembly table, made by industries and recycling existing table. Manpower needs : Physicist(s), communication with CMS, coordination, preparation and followups. Again, a “person in charge” would be welcome. Experienced person from STM (1 BE and 1 workshop), coordination of technical team, preparation and follow-up, need reinforcement of STM (also long term), AI (or T) for participating to the production of pieces (from TGIR).

Where to do all that ?? Two halls needed, one for ladder integration and one for TB2S assembly, Need to find desktops for all the new contributors, Would be much easier, also for technical reasons, to have everything in the same building. Agreed by the direction : usage of Building 30 (former “ethologie des primates”), large halls, many rooms => almost perfect ! Still some work TB2S assembly room (cleaning, crusing some walls, building a door, adding lifting device).

Backup

General CMS tracker to be replaced in “Phase II Upgrade” during LHC shutdown in 2023-2025 Using two superposed sensors each module is able to filter tracks by momentum Test electronics of acquisition system of 2S sensor for upcoming tracker upgrade
