Science Methods Review Unit 1 SchulmanLabs 2009

What is Science? Science is: Pseudoscience or FAKE science can NOT be: trying to understand the world around us. Pseudoscience or FAKE science can NOT be: tested or repeated

What is a scientist? Someone who is: Observant Creative Skeptical Curious – curiosity makes a scientist WANT to study the world around him or her. Scientists work in teams to share knowledge that helps generate new ideas. They must keep accurate records, be open and their experiment must be replicated to be CREDIBLE.

Hypothesis or Theory? HAS been tested: CAN be tested: Theory

What is experimentation? Doing an activity using careful observations to answer questions is: Experimentation A testable prediction about a solution to a problem: hypothesis The purpose of any experiment: Test a hypothesis People do experiments to test the effects of: Independent variables Judgment based on what was observed: Inference or CONCLUSION

What are Measurements? Using tools to measure is a type of: OBSERVATION. 2 parts of any measurement are: Number Unit

Graphs and Charts To analyze results scientists often arrange data in to a: GRAPH What is the independent variable in this graph? Amount of food What is the dependent variable? Weight of the cat Weight of cat Amount of food

Name that Variable! Which column is the independent variable? Shirt Type Stain Detergent Wash time Results Hanes mustard tide 15 min. stain is completely gone Era stain is slightly visible Gain None stain is half gone Which column is the independent variable? Detergent Which column is the dependent variable? Result List 3 controlled variables? Shirt type, stain, wash time Which is the control group used for comparison? The shirts washed with no detergent.
