Medieval Europe After the fall of the Roman Empire, Europe was divided into small independent kingdoms.

Medieval Europe Where do last names come from?

Medieval Europe Charlemagne united much of Western Europe and tried to revive learning in Europe.

Medieval Europe Charlemagne’s empire was divided by his grandsons in to three kingdoms.

Medieval Europe The empire’s lands were invaded by Magyars, Vikings and Muslims. The feudal system was started to protect from invasion.

Feudalism fief- a piece of land with peasants given by a lord to a vassal. lord- grants fiefs to vassals in exchange for loyalty and service vassal- pledges loyally, military service and taxes in exchange for a fief.

Feudalism A lord could be a vassal to a more powerful lord. The landowners were called nobles. They provided military service to their lords, and military protection to their vassals.

Feudalism The Feudal System created three social classes.

Feudalism Those who work: Serfs were tied to the land They provided services to their lord In return for protection Life on a manor was dull, but relatively secure.

Feudalism Those who fight: Military ability separated the warrior class from the rest of society The nobility had strong control over the rest of society.

Medieval Europe Chivalry- code of conduct for knights.

Medieval Europe Those who pray: The clergy acted as a link between God and the rest of society The monks and nuns provided spiritual and social services

Reflect/ Exit Ticket Describe the feudal system in detail. Include why it started, how it worked and the social classes it created. This is being turned- in before you leave class! You can use your notes and pages 298-302 in the textbook to help support your answers.
