Saving Francesca chapters YHSC | Year 10 English Saving Francesca chapters

Learning intentions KNOW – – – DO – BE – a responsible, respectful learner – thinking about language choices

z z Reading time Today, you are to re-read chapters 21-24 during reading time to remind you of what takes place in that part of the narrative

Re-arrange the following events from ch 21 so they are in the order in which they appear in the story Francesca talks to her father about Mia being ‘ecstatic’ last year at the idea of staying home and not working Will walks Francesca to class after the House meeting at the beginning of term 3 Robert resists Jimmy hanging around and asks whether he even has a home to go to Francesca decides to audition for Macbeth Discussion with Ortley about there being almost no female roles in Henry IV 2, 5, 4, 1, 3

Re-arrange the following events from ch 22 so they are in the order in which they appear in the story Francesca recalls Mia having to keep it together after Nonno died because other people were hysterical and she had just been offered a job at the university and so needed to keep herself together Francesca asks Mia to tell her the story of when she almost drowned Robert doesn’t want Mia to take anti-depressants Francesca races to finish her dinner to beat Robert into Mia’s room Francesca looks up depression online and Justine sees, then helps her 5, 1, 3, 4, 2

Peer review practice body paragraphs

Re-arrange the following events from ch 23 so they are in the order in which they appear in the story Ms Quinn makes Francesca go to see the school counsellor Mr Brolin gives Francesca a detention for not having a late pass, which she has, and then sends her back to Ms Quinn for being rude Francesca says she thinks she will be a teacher or a counsellor when she grows up Ms Quinn says she wants Francesca to be happy Francesca explains in detail why she wants to scream when her father says everything is okay 1, 5, 4, 3, 2

Re-arrange the following events from ch 24 so they are in the order in which they appear in the story Francesca won’t kiss Will because he has a girlfriend Angelina smokes in the toilet after promising her now-husband that she will quit on their wedding night Will’s father calls Francesca Sophia, and she figures he has no idea who she is Angelina tells Francesca to keep supporting Mia, that she will come out of her depression, and not to underestimate Robert Will tells Francesca that he supposed to be going overseas when he finishes school Robert, Francesca and Luca sway together in each other’s arms on the dance floor, like they used to as a family with Mia Francesca manages to reduce her worries about her cleavage during Angelina’s wedding until she realises that Will Trombal is there 7, 2, 4, 1, 5, 3, 6

Match the following quotes to the topic they fit best Broad areas of focus Every time I try to press [Bob] about what the doctors have to say, he’s vague or I feel he’s lying. (22) ‘Lady Macbeth kills herself, the witches disappear. Notice we become redundant in all the victory.’ (21) I don’t recognise who I am with my father these days. Lately, when I speak to him there’s this bite in my tone and I can’t stop it and I don’t know why. (21) ‘Your no-no was dead and your dad was pretending that he wasn’t, which was the last thing your mother needed.’ (22) Gender Truth Robert/Francesca relationship Mia Since quotes in essays should be brief, which specific words from each quote would you choose?

Topic sentence practice QUICK WRITE - all you can recall about what makes a good topic sentence for a body paragraph (2 mins) Imagine you are writing a body paragraph about change in Francesca’s life – write a topic sentence you could use for such a paragraph Imagine you are writing a paragraph about how Robert handles problems – again, write the topic sentence Now search chapters 21-24 to find a relevant quote that you could use in relation to one of these paragraphs

comprehension questions Review your answers to the comprehension questions

z z Paragraph practice Using the quote you just found and the topic sentence it relates to, finish off the paragraph by adding some detailed explanation You can link by summarising your point/s and reinforcing the idea from your topic sentence Even more than getting TEEL right, you should make sure your understanding of the theme and/or character/s can be clearly seen Take care not to just re-tell the story!!!
