Dystopia Day 2

When you enter class… Grab a vocabulary packet and the yellow / white handout at the front of the room. Take out your analysis packet and your seminar entry ticket.

Today Warm-up: Analyze the walls Analysis recap Peer analysis 1984 seminar 1984 historical context Vocab Packet Introduce List 1 HW: 1. Peer Analysis Typed; printed copy only

Warm-up Groups: Analyze Mr. Level based on the walls of this room. What do the walls reveal about him?

Analysis Recap Groups: Page 1. Class: Recap the “moves” from the analysis packet. Did you find yourself using any of these moves during the writing activity?

Cantelope What issues does the first paragraph have? What are the strengths of the other paragraphs? Point to specific words and sentences Which moves do you see the author using?

Peer Analysis Type a 300 word analysis of your peer. What does the questionnaire reveal about the student? Try to go beyond what it explicitly tells you and make inferences about what it shows (perhaps even unintentionally). Your analysis is NOT aimed at trying to figure out who your person is. Avoid summarizing.

Practice Seminar Usually the discussion is graded. Today, it is not. Bad habits: Hogging Monologues Vague, general statements Ignoring previous speaker Good habits: Inviting others into the conversation Asking questions Using the text Responding to others’ ideas Disagreeing Self-awareness

Key Questions Context: Why did the authors write these books? Interpretation: What do their works communicate to readers? Connection: Why do we still read them today?
