Genesis 22:1-24 Abraham’s Faith Tested & Confirmed 1 After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 2 He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” 3 So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. 4 On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar. 5 Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.” 6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. 7 And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” 8 Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together. January 22, 2019 Genesis 22:1-24 Abraham’s Faith Tested & Confirmed

Genesis 22:1-24 Abraham’s Faith Tested & Confirmed 9 When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. 11 But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 12 He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.” 13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.” January 22, 2019 Genesis 22:1-24 Abraham’s Faith Tested & Confirmed

Genesis 22:1-24 Abraham’s Faith Tested & Confirmed 15 And the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven 16 and said, “By myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies, 18 and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.” 19 So Abraham returned to his young men, and they arose and went together to Beersheba. And Abraham lived at Beersheba. 20 Now after these things it was told to Abraham, “Behold, Milcah also has borne children to your brother Nahor: 21 Uz his firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel the father of Aram, 22 Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.” 23 (Bethuel fathered Rebekah.) These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham's brother. 24 Moreover, his concubine, whose name was Reumah, bore Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah. Genesis 22:1-24 Abraham’s Faith Tested & Confirmed Genesis 22 Overview God’s command to Abraham in Genesis 12:1-3 to “go” included a promise and Abraham obeyed God’s command to Abraham in Genesis 22:1-2 to “go” did not include a promise and Abraham obeyed God’s command to Abraham in Genesis 22:1-2 seems unreasonable, illogical, even horrible, but Abraham obeyed Abraham experienced numerous tests throughout his life Abraham passed some tests and failed others God continued to work with Abraham, continually building his faith By faith, Abraham passed his “final exam” (Hebrews 11:17-19) God tests people to build their faith (James 1:2-4, 1 Peter 4:12-13) You should expect to be tested – by faith, do your best to pass God will not give up on you when you fail – learn and grow in faith Ultimately, it is God Who provides what we need: Jesus Christ January 22, 2019 Genesis 22:1-24 Abraham’s Faith Tested & Confirmed

Observation & Interpretation 1 After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 2 He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” 3 So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. 4 On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar. 5 Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.” Observations & Interpretation: After these things – some time later; Josephus wrote that Isaac was 25 years old God tested Abraham, not to cause him to stumble, but to build his faith; “final exam” Here I am – the appropriate response of a servant to his master (1 Samuel 3:1-10) Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love – clear command; no room for error Go – the same command God gave Abraham in Genesis 12:1-3 to the land of Moriah – named later by Abraham, “The LORD will provide” January 22, 2019 Genesis 22:1-24 Abraham’s Faith Tested & Confirmed

Beersheba to Jerusalem 43 miles straight line 68 miles by highway today January 22, 2019 Genesis 22:1-24 Abraham’s Faith Tested & Confirmed

5 Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.” Observations & Interpretation: After these things – some time later; Josephus wrote that Isaac was 25 years old God tested Abraham, not to cause him to stumble, but to build his faith; “final exam” Here I am – the appropriate response of a servant to his master (1 Samuel 3:1-10) Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love – clear command; no room for error Go – the same command God gave Abraham in Genesis 12:1-3 to the land of Moriah – named later by Abraham, “The LORD will provide” So Abraham rose early in the morning – no hesitation; immediate preparation & departure Abraham takes firewood with him – one less thing to worry about later Abraham orders the two young men to remain behind – no chance for interference Abrahams comment, “I and the boy will… come again to you,” hints at his faith in God January 22, 2019 Genesis 22:1-24 Abraham’s Faith Tested & Confirmed

Observation & Interpretation 6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. Observations & Interpretation: Isaac could have resisted, but cooperated, carrying his own “cross” (John 19:16-17) Father and son alone went up to the high place on Mount Moriah Isaac probably figured out what might be happening, but cooperated and did not resist God will provide…the lamb – Abraham’s response demonstrated his faith and was prophetic (John 1:29) January 22, 2019 Genesis 22:1-24 Abraham’s Faith Tested & Confirmed

Observation & Interpretation 9 When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 14 So Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.” Observations & Interpretation: bound Isaac his son – to prevent any possible last minute resistance – solid resolve! laid him on the altar – no questions, protests or resistance from Isaac (Isaiah 53:7) Abraham was determined to obey God, no matter the cost (Luke 14:25-33) the Angel of the Lord – most likely Jesus speaking for now I know that you fear God – complete and total commitment to God seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me – willing to give it all up Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked… a ram, caught – God provided a substitute God would provide the final, perfect substitute – Jesus – on the same mountain January 22, 2019 Genesis 22:1-24 Abraham’s Faith Tested & Confirmed

Observation & Interpretation 15 And the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven 16 and said, “By myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies, 18 and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.” 19 So Abraham returned to his young men, and they arose and went together to Beersheba. And Abraham lived at Beersheba. Observations & Interpretation: the Angel of the Lord – most likely Jesus speaking By myself I have sworn, declares the Lord – swearing by the highest possible authority God reassures Abraham of His covenant with him (Abrahamic Covenant) Abraham lived at Beersheba – near the well purchased from Abimelech in Genesis 21 For your consideration: If Abraham had been on Mount Moriah approximately 2,000 years later, he probably would have looked up at the crucified Messiah, Jesus, and said to God, “Now I know that You love me, seeing You have not withheld your Son, Your only Son, from dying for me.” January 22, 2019 Genesis 22:1-24 Abraham’s Faith Tested & Confirmed

Observation & Interpretation 20 Now after these things it was told to Abraham, “Behold, Milcah also has borne children to your brother Nahor: 21 Uz his firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel the father of Aram, 22 Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.” 23 (Bethuel fathered Rebekah.) These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham's brother. 24 Moreover, his concubine, whose name was Reumah, bore Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah. Discussion & Application Abraham could have begun to love God’s promises (the covenant) and blessings (Isaac and worldly wealth) more than God. What people and/or things in your life may distract you from putting and keeping God and your relationship with Him first? Why did God have Abraham go to Mount Moriah to sacrifice Isaac instead of some other location? Abraham build altars elsewhere. (2 Samuel 24:16-25, 2 Chronicles 3:1, Matthew 27, Mark 15, Luke 23, John 19) Discuss ways in which this event was similar and different from Jesus’ actual sacrifice for our sins approximately 2,000 years later. Has God tested you or required you to give up something you cherished to “get your attention,” develop your faith, and mature as a follower of Christ? Share your story, past and present. Share a time of testing in your life when God provided you with a way of escape. (1 Corinthians 10:13) January 22, 2019 Genesis 22:1-24 Abraham’s Faith Tested & Confirmed
