McGill Pediatric Residency Mentorship Program Annie Sbrocchi David Zielinski

How do you define a Mentor? Relational Guide, advisor More experienced Helps mentee achieve personal and professional goals Facilitates reflection and collaboration

Mentor versus Role Model “A role model is at point B but a mentor helps you get from point A to point B”

Mentorship: What’s in it for me? Mentee Mentor Realistic perspectives on future career Help with training decisions Support in setting priorities Work/life balance decisions Individual recognition, encouragement, support Confidence to challenge oneself in order to achieve new goals and explore alternatives Networking Increased productivity Guided self-reflection Satisfaction in helping a learner reach their academic and professional goals Rejuvenation of creative energy Enhanced career satisfaction Enhanced professional recognition

Tips for Mentorship Plan to meet at least 2-3 each year Define expectations for mentoring at the start There is no “one size fits all” approach Like any relationship, this one takes time and commitment from both parties to evolve successfully Mentoring does not require a time consuming personal relationship. A close friendship is not necessary for a mentoring relationship to be successful

Tips for Mentorship: Residents Be enthusiastic, ambitious, and curious when discussing your interests and goals with your mentor Be receptive to feedback and suggestions This relationship with your mentor should not preclude you from seeking guidance from your program directors, other faculty or from other McGill resources

Tips for Mentorship :Faculty The mentor need not be "all knowing" in all areas, but should function as a facilitator If the time commitment seems too great, you are likely trying to do too much. Do not let trying to be a perfect mentor get in the way of being a good one Residents need realistic role models, and mentors should attempt to model an appropriate balance between personal and professional lives.

Mentorship Program - Goals To ensure pediatric residents have faculty mentors by mid R1 year
