In your words… What is the “tone” What is the “mood” in language? *It’s okay to take a guess!

You can usually find a tone by asking these three questions: Tone refers to an author’s use of words and writing style to convey his or her attitude towards a topic. Tone is often defined as what the author feels about the subject. What the reader feels is known as the mood. You can usually find a tone by asking these three questions:  Why was this written? Who is the intended audience? What does the author want the reader to learn, understand, or think about? In formal writing, your tone should be clear, concise, confident, and courteous. In informal writing, your tone is more subjective, but you should always aim to communicate clearly. Genre sometimes determines the tone.

What are examples of each? How can you tell? Formal Writing Informal Writing What are examples of each? How can you tell?

Tone and Emphasis I didn’t say I would watch my sister.

Tone is the way feelings are expressed. Let’s Recap… Tone is the way feelings are expressed. What are some adjectives an author uses to indicate his/her tone?

In literature, mood is a literary element that evokes certain feelings or vibes in readers through words and descriptions. Mood is developed in a literary piece through various methods. setting  theme tone syntax Though mood and tone are related and often confused, they are very different literary devices. Tone refers to the author’s attitude toward the work, while the definition of mood is that it is the emotions provoked in the reader. The difference can be understood in this way: tone is how the author feels, while mood is how the reader feels.

Let’s Practice! What is the correct mood definition? A. The author’s attitude toward the subject of the book. B. The emotions that the work of literature provokes in the reader. C. The way the characters in the book feel about their situation.
