Finalizing a Vision for a Caring School Community Note: this is a follow-up session to the vision-building module. During this session, the staff will review and finalize a draft vision for the school culture. Materials Charts from previous vision-setting session Draft Vision Statement, either on chart paper or on slide Copies of Draft Vision Statement for all participants (optional) Time needed: 25-30 minutes _______________________________________________________________________________ SLIDE: Title Slide 1 minute Recap for participants the process so far, which included: Staff providing input about a vision of the school’s culture. CSC Leadership Team drafting a vision. Let them know that today they will review the draft agenda, revise as needed, and decide how to best use the vision.

Share vision SLIDE: Share Vision 2-4 minutes Have a copy of the vision for everyone. It might be helpful to have hard copies for all to be able to write on. Read the vision aloud.

Discuss the Draft Vision With a partner, discuss the following: What resonates with you about this vision? Does this reflect what we discussed? If not, what do we need to change? SLIDE: Discuss the Draft Vision 5 minutes Remind everyone that this is a working vision and can be modified over time. It needs to be a vision that everyone can live with, even if it’s not exactly how they would write it themselves. Have teachers work in partners to discuss the following two questions.

Whole Group Discussion What resonates for you about this vision? Does this reflect what we discussed? If not, what do we need to change? SLIDE: Whole Group Discussion 10 minutes Discuss as a whole group. Remind everyone that this needs to be a vision that everyone can live with, even if it’s not exactly how they would write it themselves. If anyone has revisions that they request, ask if the rest of the group can live with the change, then make change on chart or slide version of the vision. Note: you want to leave this session with a draft version everyone can live with.

Final Vision Read Final Vision aloud for whole group. SLIDE: Final vision 1 minute Read Final Vision aloud for whole group.

Reflect How can we use this vision in our school? How will we share it with students, parents, other adults? SLIDE: Reflect 5 minutes Turn to a partner to discuss the following questions. Whole group conversation about each question. Share how you will distribute the vision (e.g., email to everyone, post in teacher’s workroom, post in the office, etc.).
