Fact Families

Objective Today we will learn to write multiplication and division fact families.

Let’s Review Definitions Addend - Any number being added. 6 + 5 = 11 Inverse Operation - An opposite operation that undoes another. 5 + 4 = 9 9 - 5 = 4

Addition/Subtraction Fact Families are found by: Starting with a simple addition fact. ( 2 + 5 = 7) Changing the addends around. (5 + 2 = 7) Writing the Inverse operations for both. (7 - 2 = 5 & 7 - 5 = 2)

What are the 4 members of the Fact Family of 3 + 4 = 7? 4 + 3 = 7 7 - 3 = 4 7 - 4 = 3

What are the 4 members of the Fact Family of 8 + 1 = 9? 1 + 8 = 9 9 - 8 = 1 9 - 1 = 8

Multiplication Definitions Factors - The numbers being multiplied. 4 x 8 = 32 Inverse Operation - An opposite operation that undoes another. 4 x 8 = 32 32 / 4 = 8

Multiplication/Division Fact Families are found by: Starting with a simple multiplication fact. ( 3 x 9 = 27) Changing the Factors around. (9 x 3 = 27) Writing the Inverse operations for both. (27 / 3 = 9 & 27 / 9 = 3)

What are the 4 members of the Fact Family of 3 x 7 = 21? model 3 x 7 = 21 7 x 3 = 21 21 / 3 = 7 21 / 7 = 3

What are the 4 members of the Fact Family of 6 x 4 = 24? 24 / 6 = 4 24 / 4 = 6

What are the 4 members of the Fact Family of 7 x 8 = 56? Guided 7 x 8 = 56 8 x 7 = 56 56 / 7 = 8 56 / 8 = 7

What are the 4 members of the Fact Family of 9 x 7 = 63? 63 / 9 = 7 63 / 7 = 9

What are the 4 members of the Fact Family of 6 x 7 = 42? 42 /6 = 7 42 / 7 = 6

Multiplication/Division Fact Families are found by: Starting with a simple multiplication fact. ( 3 x 9 = 27) Changing the Factors around. (9 x 3 = 27) Writing the Inverse operations for both. (27 / 3 = 9 & 27 / 9 = 3) CFU

Closure A fact family will have two multiplication problems and two division problems. Inverse Operation - An opposite operation that undoes another. 3x4=12 *** 12/ 4 = 3

Independent Practice Write a multiplication and division fact family for the following: 1) 5 x6 = 30 6) 9x8 = 72 2) 8x3 = 24 7) 4x8 = 32 3) 7x2 = 14 8) 3x9 = 27 4) 6x8 = 48 9) 9x 2 =18 5) 2x4 = 8 10) 4x 6 = 24

Answers 1) 5 x6 = 30 6x5=30 30/6=5 30/5=6 2) 8x3=24 3x8=24 24/8=3 24/3=8 3) 7x2=24 2x7=14 14/2=7 14/7=2 4) 6x8=48 8x6=48 48/6=8 48/8=6 5) 2x4=8 4x2=8 8/4=2 8/2=4

6) 9x8=72 8x9=72 72/9=8 72/8=0 7) 4x8=32 8x4=32 32/8=4 32/4=8 8) 3x9=27 9x3=27 27/9=3 27/3=9 9) 9x2=18 2x9=18 18/9=2 18/2=9 10) 4x6=24 6x4=24 24/6=4 24/4=6
