Lesson 5 Simplifying Algebraic Expressions Unit 3A Expressions Lesson 5 Simplifying Algebraic Expressions

Lesson 5: Simplify Algebraic Expressions Objective: Swbat simplify algebraic expressions. Do Now: Name the property. a. 5(7 + 2) = 5(7) + 5(2) b. 12 + x + 10 = x + 12 + 10 c. 8 + (10 + 2) = (8 + 10) + 2 d. x ∙ 1 = x 2. Distribute (6 + 7)x 3. Distribute and Evaluate 7(4 + 2) 4. Simplify (v + 6)3 5. Simplify 2(x + 10)

Lesson 5: Simplifying Algebraic Expressions Definitions Constant - a term without a variable. Like Terms – contain the same variables to the same powers. Simplest Form – an algebraic expression that has no like terms or parentheses.

Lesson 5: Simplifying Algebraic Expressions Example 1: 6n – 7n -4 + 3n + 9 Like terms: 6n, -7n, 3n (add the coefficients) 6 + -7 + 3 → 2n Constant: -4, 9 (add constants) -4 + 9 → 5 Simplest Form: 2n + 5

Lesson 5: Simplifying Algebraic Expressions Example 2: 4x – x + 2 + 2x - 5 Like Terms: 4x, -x, 2x 4 + -1 + 2→ 5x Constants: 2, -5 2 + -5 → -3 Simplest Form: 5x -3 Example 3: 9y – 4 -11y + 7 Like Terms: 9y, -11y 9 + -11 → -2y Constants: -4, 7 -4 + 7 → 3 Simplest Form: -2y + 3

Lesson 5: Simplifying Algebraic Expressions Try It! 4. 3x + 2 -10 – 8x Like Terms: Constants: Simplest Form: 5. 5n - 4 - 2n + 9 - 3n

Lesson 5: Simplifying Algebraic Expressions Simplify Algebraic Expressions with Parentheses. 6. 3(x + 2) -5 + 2x Use Distributive Property : 3x + 6 – 5 + 2x Like Terms: Constants: Simplest Form: 7. 5n -4(2n + 1) - 3 Use Distributive Property: 5n -8n – 4 -3

Lesson 5: Simplifying Algebraic Expressions Simplify: 1.) 7x – 2 - 7x + 6 = 2.) 6 – 3n + 5n = 3.) 2(g – 3) + 11 – 8g 4.) 3(x + 4) + 2x =

Lesson 5: Simplifying Algebraic Expressions Real-World Example The cost of a jacket, j, after a 5% markup can be represented by the expression j + .05j. Simplify the expression. b. Determine the cost of the jacket after the markup, if the original price is $35.

Lesson 5: Simplifying Algebraic Expressions Real-World Example At a concert, you buy t-shirts for $12 each and the same number of CDs for $7.50 each. Write an expression that represents the total amount spent. b. Simplify the expression. c. Find the total amount.
