Time of oral presentations The time slot for an oral presentation is 20 minutes, including discussion. A talk should, therefore, not exceed 15 minutes.

Structure of oral presentations You may think in terms of the following slides: 1 title slide with name(s) of author(s), title of paper and affiliations(s) 1 slide with what the paper is about 1-2 slides with the hypotheses and/or questions 2-3 slides covering your methodology and procedures 6-8 slides covering your results 3-4 slides for discussion and conclusions 1 slide with acknowledgements Some 15-20 slides is an optimal number for an oral presentation.

Technical context The room for oral presentations will be equipped with a multimedia PC running Windows, which has a CD/DVD drive, Microsoft PowerPoint and Acrobat Reader available. You may bring your presentation on a CD or on a USB flash drive. In case you have doubts about your presentation being properly displayed by the available equipment, please check it as soon as possible in the preparation room.

Presentations techniques Use colours that work well together – that are easy to see from far away Limit the information provided on each slide to only the essentials Use effects, transitions and animation very sparingly

Presentations techniques Use clip art, pictures, charts, tables and diagrams to enhance presentation content Use a chart or graph to present statistics Data in graphs are easier to comprehend & retain than raw data Trends are easier to visualize in graph form Always title your graphs Hardly more than two graphs per slide

Presentations techniques Use 1-2 slides per minute of your presentation Write in point form, not complete sentences Include 4-6 points per slide Avoid wordiness: use key words and phrases only

Presentations techniques Use an effective and strong closing Your audience is likely to remember your last words Use a conclusion slide to: Summarize the main points of your presentation Suggest future avenues of research
