Why was Rosie the Riveter Invented? During WWII, men were being drafted, leaving their jobs behind. Factory workers were needed. With a lack of male labor, women filled in these jobs. The Office of War Information (OWI) needed to create a figure that would encourage women to take these jobs, Rosie the Riveter. Women created weapons and aided the injured.

Rosie the Riveter Norman Rockwell modeled Rosie off of a young woman, Geraldine Hoff, as an advertisement to promote factory employment. Stressed the patriotic need for women to enter the workforce. He took the name from a 1942 song, “Rosie the Riveter,” to make a broad appeal to all women but never expected it to make such a large impact on society as a whole. I’ll read this one

The Lasting Effects of Rosie the Riveter When the men came back from war most women did not want to give up their jobs. Women now had the desire to not just be mother and wives but to also do more to contribute to society and to promote the image of working women. Despite its ideas, gender roles were not significantly redefined after World War II. In the 1950s, women returned to their roles as housewives and mothers.

Hall of Fame or Shame? Initially, one would assume that she deserves fame because of her status as a feminist icon The resurgence of gender roles in 1950s contradicts this, though. Is Rosie the Riveter a feminist icon (fame)? Or merely a tool for war propaganda (shame)?
