Presentation transcript:

Ensure the cursor is in cell A1 of the ‘Output worksheet. Enter the name of a city for which you wish to collect data.

Ensure the cursor is in cell A1 of the ‘Input’ worksheet. To edit the web query, select Edit Query… from the Data, Get External Data… menu

In the Edit Web Query dialogue box, edit the URL by clicking once on the URL, replace the word ‘York’ with [“city” “which city?”]. Click on ‘OK’ to finish. In a web query, the URL can be modified to prompt the user for information when it is run. To do this, replace part of the URL with text contained by quotation marks and enclosed by square brackets. The syntax is important. For example: http://www.onlineweather.com/v4/uk/climate/York.html has the city replaced: http://www.onlineweather.com/v4/uk/climate/[“city” “which city?”].html When the web query is run, a dialogue box will appear for the user to input the name of the city. This name is then used by the web query to complete the URL.

A dialogue box will appear, prompting the user for input. Do not enter a city here. Hide the dialogue box by clicking on the red square. Select cell A1 in the ‘Output’ worksheet. The cell reference will appear in the input box. Click on the red arrow to recover the dialogue box. Tick the two option boxes to make the web query pick the cell automatically and refresh when the cell changes. Click OK.

The data for the new city will be entered into the worksheet, the data in the ‘Process’ worksheet will be updated and the ‘Output’ worksheet will graph the new data automatically.

To change the city for data collection, type in the name of the city in cell A1 on the ‘Output’ worksheet and press return. The web query will run, collect the data and the worksheets will process and display the data.
