Paul Gauguin Born June 7, 1848 and died May 8 1903 He was a leading French Post-Impressionist artist, painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramist and writer.

Though born in Paris, Paul Gauguin’s family moved to Peru when he was three years old. This ignited a desire in him for world travel. He spent his early marriage as a successful stockbroker in Paris, before deciding to chase his dreams to travel and become an artist.

In 1887, after visiting Panama, he spent several months near Saint Pierre in Martinique, in the company of his friend. He enjoyed watching people in their daily activities.[4] However, the weather in the summer was hot and the hut leaked in the rain.

Tahitian Landscape Gauguin eventually settled in Tahiti, where he captured the beauty of French Polynesia in his artwork. Unfortunately, Gauguin was unable to make a decent living selling his artwork. He died sick and penniless, never aware of the impact his art would make on the world after his death.

Large Blue Horses Post Impressionism is a way of using vivid colors, thick application of paint, distinctive brush strokes, and real-life subject matter, but they were more inclined to emphasize geometric forms, to distort form for expressive effect, and to use unnatural or arbitrary color.

The Swineherd

Let’s discuss foreground, middle ground and background Let’s discuss foreground, middle ground and background. Where would you place each of these cars in the picture?

Notice that objects appearing in the foreground are larger than those in the middle ground and background.

Gauguin-style Landscape Painting Did you notice how Gauguin used bold colors in his paintings? Isn’t it strange that he sometimes painted objects a completely different color than you would expect to see them? You are going to paint a landscape using bold watercolors, making sure to paint things not as they are, but in colors you wouldn’t expect. (For example, the sky could be red, or a tree could be purple.)

Instructions: Draw a simple landscape in pencil on your paper. Use your pencil lightly. Start by drawing the background.

3. Draw a few objects in the middle ground.

4. Now draw the foreground 4. Now draw the foreground. Remember to make it larger than anything else in your drawing.

5. Outline your entire drawing using black Sharpie.

6. Using liquid watercolors, fill in all the white space 6. Using liquid watercolors, fill in all the white space. Make sure to mostly use colors that are unexpected. (For example, a pink tree trunk, or a brown sky.)
