“True/False” Game The Resume Version

Your resume exists because your future employer isn’t a mind-reader. True False

True. Your resume can explain what you’ve done before, and what you do well.

Plan on ONE page of resume for each year you’ve been in high school. True False

False. Keep your resume to one page total. This will help you include only the most important items. But make sure that you include specifics for those important items, so that the reader understands the complete picture of what you’ve done.

You should use the same font—and same font sizes—for your cover letter and resume. True False

True. This one tip can help your job-hunt materials look more professional.

A resume should be free of most errors. True False

False. Your resume should be free of ALL errors. If a resume looks sloppy because of errors, a potential employer might wonder if you’d be sloppy on the job, too. Don’t let typos be the reason your resume—and you—don’t move forward in the hiring process. If proofreading isn’t your strong suit, ask someone for help with this.

A resume is a one-page marketing tool. True False

True. In describing your key strengths and helpful past experiences, your resume helps to efficiently communicate why you would be a great hire. A strong resume can set up an invitation to interview. It also helps the interview to go more smoothly. (In all likelihood, some of the interview questions will come from information on your resume—information you feel good about.)

What are common headings on a resume? …Only a template can know… True False

False. Common headings include: Contact information (make sure it’s up-to-date & professional!) Executive summary Education Work experience Volunteer work Activities Skills

Include your hobbies in your resume. This adds some extra pizzazz! True False

False. Don’t include your hobbies unless they’re DIRECTLY relevant to the job you’re applying for.

An “executive summary” section is pretty much used just in grown-up resumes. True False

False. The “executive summary” section is just a fancy-pants title used to name that brief section that comes right after your contact information. It quickly describes what your key qualities are. What do YOU bring to the table? What does your potential employer get if they hire YOU? This can be 5 adjectives that describe you, or maybe 1 or 2 sentences that describe your work style. This section provides a frame for everything that comes after it. And everything that comes after it is proof in some way of those things you’ve said in your executive summary.
