Presentation transcript:

IB Psych 9/14/17 Today’s Agenda: DUE: Questions from “Exercise and Psychological Health” Take out : Notes/Paper Note-taking devices Your “Describe” SAQ Today’s Learning Objectives: I can begin to address a command term and understand the structure of an SAQ. Today’s Agenda: “Exercise and Psychological Health” w/questions marking Debriefing our first SAQ HW: Take yet another shot at the “Describe” question.

Read the response to the question from Paper 1. More Practice… Read the response to the question from Paper 1. Assess the level of proficiency the student used in their response. (0-8) Be prepared to defend your stance. Then, we’ll see how we did…compared to: Steen the IB examiner.

This is how the IB examiner marked this response… More Practice… This is how the IB examiner marked this response… The method is satisfactorily described, but the study is not focused on cognition, but on biology. It is a “biological factors on cognitive processes” example. 3 marks

Markbands/Rubric Exemplary Standard Incomplete Off-topic IB Score High 8-7 Mid 6-4 Low3-1 Zero Descriptor The question is answered in a focused and effective manner and meets the demands of the command term. The response is supported by appropriate and accurate knowledge and understanding of research The question is partially answered. Knowledge and understanding is accurate but limited. Either the command term is not effectively addressed or the response is not sufficiently explicit in answering the question. There is an attempt to answer the question, but knowledge and understanding is limited, often inaccurate, or of marginal relevance to the question. The answer does not reach a standard described by the descriptors below.

Now, back to your responses… We will be writing…it’s a major form of communicating information— embrace it! Part of that process must be revising… So, focusing on the “Describe” question: Describe Give a detailed account Write a narrative that outlines the details of something using examples. Outline Give a brief account or summary of something. Give a brief summary of whatever is mentioned in the question. “Describe the link between exercise and stress”

SAQ Structure Suggestions Address the command term and prompt immediately. While not an essay, think of this as your introduction. Prompt: Describe one study of conformity. “In describing one study in relation to conformity, the following narrative will outline the details of the concept, using examples from performed research.” WHY: at least two reasons. It demonstrated your understanding of the command term to your reader—who happen to be human, and can be immediately impressed with your knowledge of all things IB… It provides an anchor to YOU to help keep you on point throughout the response.

SAQ Structure Suggestions Define any terms that warrant further demonstration of knowledge. Conformity Apply the defined word beyond the definition to demonstrate your understanding of the word in relation to a more general population. Put it in “layman’s” terms…

SAQ Structure Suggestions SAMRC (SCRAM) Name and address the research study By name and year is best…not a defined requirement, but again, the readers are human…if you make them work harder, chances are it will be harder to award marks. Deal with the details of the Study Aim Method—type of study & participants Results Conclusion

An Organizational Technique (PEE) adapted from Thomas Galvez, IB Teacher at Saigon International School Point = Establishes the main idea you will explain in your paragraph- rephrase the question/prompt. Command Term & Definitions of concepts Evidence = A detail or specific example to support your point- RESEARCH STUDY (SAMRC) Name and know the details of your study! Explanation = Connecting the relevance of the evidence to your point- so what? What does it tell us about behavior in context of the prompt? Tie this back to the CT and prompt…
