Break Time!

EVALUATION… what do you use?

Break Time!

Steps to developing a course web-page: 1. Request Templates 2. Edit Templates in Netscape Composer 3. FTP Contents of Folder to Account 4. Let Fred Boyko Know the Address

Requesting the course page templates: 1. Get a hold of me (Rachel Hirsch). - phone: 492 - 0035 - e-mail: rhirsch@ualberta.ca - drop in: BS P-441 2. Request how you would like to receive the templates. - disk - file transfer/FTP 3. It is suggested that the templates folder be placed on your desktop (windows -> desktop).

Edit main course page: Open the templates folder in Netscape Composer.

Edit main course page: Once the main course page template is open there are several adjustments that can be made so that it is personalised. The following suggestions are the most generic ways in which the page can be personalised, other methods may work better for the individual. Note: other editors can also be used

Edit main course page: Let’s see how exactly these changes can be made: - main course page Clicking the publish icon at any time will allow you to ensure that your page looks how you want it to.

Edit main course page: Once all changes have been made to the main course page you will want to save your work. Just as with any other program look under ‘File’ for ‘Save As’ and choose your new page name.

Edit syllabus page: The procedure for editing the syllabus is the same as it was for the main course page: 1. Open in Netscape Composer from the Templates folder. 2. Edit/personalise the page. 3. Save the page with a personalised name. Let’s see what changes can be made: - syllabus

Edit the schedule page: The procedure for editing the schedule page is the same as it was for the main course page: 1. Open in Netscape Composer from the Templates folder. 2. Edit/personalise the page. 3. Save the page with a personalised name. Let’s see what changes can be made: - schedule

Edit the announcements page: The procedure for editing the announcements page is the same as it was for the main course page: 1. Open in Netscape Composer from the Templates folder. 2. Edit/personalise the page. 3. Save the page with a personalised name. Let’s see what changes can be made: - announcements

FTP templates folder to your account: You should have the following icon on your desktop. The FTP account allows you to publish pages on the Internet.

FTP templates folder to your account: Click on the FTP icon to open it up. To log in: - profile name is ice.psych.ualberta.ca - host name/address - user ID personal ID (ask Fred) - Password personal password (ask Fred)

FTP templates folder to your account: When you are logged on you will have your account information on the right and the contents of your computer on the left.

FTP templates folder to your account: Find your templates folder on desktop in the left window (local system). Click the green arrow to get to the first screen. - windows - desktop - templates

FTP templates folder to your account: Find the folder in your account where you want to publish your course page. Often you will want to use a “public_html” folder. You might want to create this folder if you do not already have it.

FTP templates folder to your account: Now all you have to do is transfer the updated folder from your desktop to your account.

E-mail Fred Boyko: Once you have completed all the previous steps all you need to do is let Fred Boyko know your course page address so that it can be added to the Psychology Department page. E-mail Fred at fred.boyko@ualberta.ca using your course page address as the subject line. You can now create the basic course page. Congratulations!

Posting Lecture Notes: Lecture notes can be easily posted on the schedule page by saving each notes section in Microsoft Word as an HTML document. The icons for lecture notes on the schedule_temp.html page are each labelled using the following format: notes(x).html. Thus, you will want to likewise label your notes in Word according to the order you would like it posted. Once you save the notes in HTML format just FTP them to your templates folder in your account. Done!

Posting Student’s Marks: To post student marks all you have to do is send an e-mail to grades@psych.ualberta.ca: 1. The subject will be your course ID (ex. p223A1). 2. The body of the e-mail is exactly what you want the students to see posted. You will likely have to cut and paste the list of marks from your computer to the body of the e-mail message. DO NOT use attachments!
