Model UN Meeting 5/19/16 FINAL MEETING

NEW MEMBERS Welcome any new members interested in Model UN!!!! This school year is over, but we hope to expand further next year and become more involved in conferences and discussions. It is the perfect time to join MUN if you are interested. Make sure you put your name on the sign-in sheet and sign up for the Remind so that we can give you any new information!!! Make sure you catch up on what you missed this year by reviewing the updates, resources, and bylaws on the website.

About MUN Model UN is a great opportunity to showcase and develop advanced resolution, discussion, and public speaking skills. Each year we will compete in a conference at the University of Houston (as observed this year) and will spend time preparing for this conference as well as any other conferences we can attend. This involves the country selection process, familiarizing with the parliamentary procedures of the UN, and the actual background research and topic preparation. The UN is divided into parts, each with a distinct and important responsibility. To participate in Model UN, you must be familiar with its many parts.

About MUN Part 2 There are two main events in Model UN: Committees: An assembly where delegates of a countries who are apart of a specific organization within the UN (UNESCO, WHO, UNSC) aim to make a resolution on a particular topic regarding that organization area of expertise. Crisis Committees: It is an assembly where students roleplay as key individuals in a historical event.

New Meeting Structure The new meetings for the upcoming year will now be organized and structured as: Current Event Discussions Mock Conferences Researching/Preparing for Conference Public Speaking Practice Debates Informational Meetings

CURRENT EVENTS Keeping up with international events is crucial to success in Model UN. Understanding the context of global affairs and staying up to date can ensure better comprehension of what is happening and its meaning. Thus, we will try to have regular discussions as a group For these discussions the topics will be announced via Remind and/or the website. DON’T BE SHY ABOUT SUGGESTING TOPICS; WE WELCOME YOUR INPUT INTO DECIDING WHAT IS RELEVANT TO TALK ABOUT! Aside from these specific discussions, remember to read the news and remain wary of global issues in order to get the most out of this club.

Bylaws To maintain order, we have created bylaws to help run the Model UN club smoothly. Some key things are: - Article VI: Point System - Article VII: Conference Participation - Article X: Club Expulsion -Article V: Officers, Subsection A Changes to the bylaws will still be made. The final bylaws for the 2016-2017 school year will be available at the beginning of the year.

Fundraisers and Shirts We will begin to do more fundraising activities next year to raise more money (so you pay less for conferences). These will be incorporated into the bylaws point system and can hopefully cover some of the fees associated with attending conferences. In addition, the light blue Model UN shirts will be available for sale next, and we might design more shirts given certain demand and funding.

Final Wrap Up for 2015-2016 Next year will involve a greater focus on parliamentary procedures while still continuing with as many current event discussions as possible. Be sure to attend these discussions next year as they will count towards attendance and are a great way to practice MUN skills! We need better attendance and participation in these, and we will also post the resolutions in advance from now on for more time to prepare and research. More information on how to research for MUN and extra resources will be on the website. REMEMBER: Always check the website for information and updates!
